Engine not starting

firstly Jalal sorry if this is covered elswhere but could not find anything simular to my problem.
My Exy refused to start last week (early morning and cold) tried to start the car for about ten minutes but wouldn't start ended up having to ring the NRMA.
He checked engine management but no faults coming up or during cranking he ended up pulling out the sparkplugs and said to get new ones as they didn't look good.I got some new sparkplugs fitted them started first go with a big cloud off smoke by this time the battery had tried to start the car for nearly half a hour in total so the battery was good.Now three days later i thought it was doing the same thing in the morning but she kicked over and i went to work ,that afternoon got in the car wont start again i decided to pullout the sparks and check them pulled them out they were soaked in fuel i cleaned and dried them put them back started straight away and again big cloud of smoke so she is Flooding but my trips to work are 50klm so not the short driveway movement which can cause the bore wash.Did a ECU reset yesterday just in case and drove to Lithgow parked the car came out this morning to go home wont start again again pulled the sparkplugs out and dried and cleaned them and she fired once again.
So now im out off ideas off what it could be so any suggestions would be good.

Hi Ray,

This sounds like intermittent spark problem... when the plugs don't fire, they will get wet with fuel... So check all of the ignition components, make sure there are no loose connections to the coils and plug wires.

Problems with the fuel injectors leaking can cause one of the spark plugs to be covered in fuel, but since you are saying that all of them are covered in fuel, it is unlikely that the fuel injectors are leaking or stuck in the open position.

The other possible cause is a faulty fuel pressure regulator letting fuel pressure in the injector rail go too high and causing an over-rich mixture and engine flooding.

You can do a little test to determine what's wrong:

Hold the accelerator to steadily to the floor while cranking --- DO NOT PUMP THE PEDAL! --- This will allow the maximum amount of air to mix with the overage of fuel in the cylinders and help the engine to eliminate the excess without also adding too much back in...

If you still can't get it to fire off doing the above, then remove the fuel pump relay or fuse and repeat the above until the engine tries to run.... It will run briefly until it fuel starves and dies. Then replace whichever you removed and try starting again with fuel delivery back in service.

The NRMA guy did that when it first happened (foot on the floor)and proceeded to remove the plugs which were soaked with fuel then .
So might get that fuel regulator checked.

Well just replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter cause they are together in the fuel tank. She started pretty much straight away and died but the filter was empty she fired on the second go and kept on going emoticon

Tomorrow morning will tell if the problem is fixed. For those who want to know the filter was $42 and the regulator $131 these are prices from Nissan if someone orders a fuel regulator make sure you get the 'o' ring to fit it cause they don't supply one with it .

I reckon your exy is cured mate and the fuel pressure regulator might got affected by a durty fuel filter, so that is why I said in the past, forget what Nissan says about the fuel filter not needing replacement and get it changed at the 100K service.

well three days ago it came back with a vengance couldnt get it start at all , spend all saturday pulling all the plugs off and clean but to no avail.yesterday finally got her going again may have caused some damage to my startermotor as it is a bit more noisy now was running like a dog did a ECU reset and she started purring like a kitten.
Pulled my 02 sensor out last night and checked for voltage and resistance ,OHM reading bit on the high side it should be 2.3-4.3 OHM my reading was 6 OHM.
Put it in tried to start the car this morning started first go and second without any problem.
Im ordering a new 02 sensor tomorrow and see how that goes.
