visit to a friend
Finally arrived home yesterday, after two months away - Sunshine Coast, Coffs Harbour/X-trail meetup, Armidale, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Mackay. I added around 7,000km to the speedo - along with a new clutch & flywheel in Armidale, and crank & cam sensors at Nambour.
I'd been looking forward to visiting a friend in the bush north of Mackay and my return trip was the time to do it. It's 28km from highway to humpy, usually takes an hour, but this time extra slowly since the road had deteriorated since my last visit, plus I had my pushbike on the back. Bearing in mind the track had been through 3 cyclones in the last few years, including Yasi, it wasn't too bad.
Here are a few pics of the road up over the range:
The locked Forestry gate, where I had to wait for my friend to drive the 20km down to meet me and let me in.
Maybe this was why they locked it, just finished logging, lots of usable stuff left over and a total mess
Especially since the picnic area still looked lovely
Onwards
and upwards
Looking down to where we'd driven thru the decimated forest, then continued upwards, dodging rocks which my friend eventually started clearing out of the way since I'd been hitting too many of them. They really didn't look that big, I thought I had enough clearance....
Oops part of the road is missing, and gee that looks a long way down
still travelling up
So still only half way there, we had yet to drive around the western end of this mountain in the distance and halfway back along the other side
At last we turned off onto the home run, only another 6kms thereabouts. The wheelruts were fun, deeper than they looked - it was either scrape the bottom or scrape the paintwork, I opted to scrape the paintwork.
Now this little patch doesn't look too bad, but luckily my friend never leaves home without a shovel and we remade the road
Aaahh, almost there
Now this is a steep bit, but not as bad as it looks
but this is worse than it looks, very steep - two goes, that smooth rock is a bit tricky. Last time I was here it was a crumbling culvert but it did the job.
Here at last,
but did I really just drive though that, and now I gotta go back that way... hope it doesn't rain.
Didn't take pics on the way out, too busy driving. Next time I won't have the bike on the back, and maybe I'll have a couple bash plates underneath.

Re:
Wow Julie, you must have a lot of friends that live off the beaten track.
Every time you take the Xy out you always seem to go on an adventure.
Good for you.
