Windscreen washer problem.. Is it an electrical problem?

I got my 2008 xtrail about a year and a half ago and all has been fine but I have a minor but annoying problem with my window washers. Usually when you squeeze the window washer washer/wiper lever, the front windscreen gets washed, and when you push it forward the back window washer works. For a little while, every now and then whenever I squeeze the window washer, it would wash the back window, and not the front. It got worse over a few weeks (ie. working less then more and always washing the back window rather then the front) and now its completely confused and never works to wash the front window.

When you squeeze, the back washer works, and when you push, the back washer works. It's a small but annoying problem, I'd like to be able to wash my window when a car or truck splatters mud or grim on my windscreen. Does it sound like an electrical problem, or something else? Is it something I can try and fix myself or do I need to put the car into Nissan or an auto electrician to have look? Anyone else had the same problem? Thanks emoticon

Re:

Most probably worn contacts on the wiper control arm in the steering wheel, so I'd get the dealer to check it out and have it replaced. The whole wiper arm would probably cost around $90 bucks to replace.

Re:

Just remove the cover that encloses the steering column (2 screws underneath) and unclip the stalk, check the connections and wires, then re clip it in.
Could be as simple as that.

Re:

Hey guys, I know I started this thread a long time ago but I wanted to bump it and ask a quick question.. The other day whilst trying to clean out my vents from the rat fiasco, I decided to pull the steering column apart to have a look at the wiper arm connections.. For all of this year, the wiper arm has been permanently on back window wash only when squeeze and pushed, but when I took apart the column and checked the connections then put it back together, the wiper arm actually washed the front window when squeezed once like it should. I tried it again then it was back to doing the back window. I checked the connection again to see if it was loose or just wasn't sitting right but it was fine.

Any idea if there's anything else there that might have been getting bumped or that I should check? It seemed weird after not working for so long that it worked once when I put it back together then not again. I can't seem to replicate it.

Guess I might have to bite the bullet and take the car into Nissan after all this time. Perhaps they can clean the vents and look at the wiper arm at the same time.

Re:

You can easily score a used wiper control arm from the wreckers for around $80 bucks or so. One of the contacts on your wiper control arm might have stopped working and the unit itself can't be dismantled as it's one piece.

Re:

It's just one nut holding the arm to the wiper motor.
You might have to pop the black cover that conceals the nut.

Re:

Tony, the wiper control arm is the one that is coming out of the steering wheel, it's the wiper stalk.

It's just a plug and play type of arm that and to take it out, just press on the tabs on both sides of the base of the wiper control and pull it out. If you haven't done this before, now is a good time to spray clean the contacts of the wiper control and see if that fixes the problem.
