Wheel Sensors ???

Out driving last Sunday & picked up a stick near the drivers rear wheel emoticon
I removed it straight away, but then noticed both the '4wd' & 'ABS' dash lights were on. Tried a couple of different things like...ign on/off, play with selector...made no difference, also noticed only had 2wd (front) no matter what I did emoticon

Got home & searched on here & noticed all roads led to wheel sensor.
Climbed under & checked for any damage, broken or ripped out wire(s), nothing visible. Took it to Auto Elec. Told him about the stick & lights, & straight up he said sensor.
He climbed under for visual & gave the all clear, so then he stuck his 'my machine gunna talk ta your machine' gizmo on & said it reported a fault at that wheel. He tried clearing the fault (a couple of times) just in case it'd been a hic-cup, but it wouldn't clear. So I left it with him & went back later.
Arrived back & he says that it also appears the sensor is functioning, he can't understand it. Said he went to swap the faulty (RH) with the good (LH) to see if error code(?) would follow that sensor, but apparently swapping 'round can't be done!

I'll (begrudingly) pay the the money if replacement is the fix, but at high $300+ (without labour) for a new part, seems a tad expensive way of eleminating whether the sensor is faulty or not emoticon
Any idea/s amongst the Brain's Trust here?

Also, are these things interchangable from previous yrs/model(s), or are they yr/model specific?

Re: Wheel Sensors ???

If you definatetely KNOW that the stick impacted on that wheel hub and sensor, the fault has to be there.

I would

1. cut the wiring and ensure that a circuit of some decription exists via the magnetic pick up. Ensure the circuit is not shorted to vehicle earth as well. Looking at wiring extenal insulation does not always pick up internal faults, like snapped or stretched conductors inside the insulation.

2. remove the sensor (think its a ten mm bolt...thay can be difiicult to slide out of the hub and may need some serious wriggling with pliers) clean the face of the ABS sensor with some electro clean, also spray electro clean nto sensor housing as wheel is rotated to try and clean the surface of the ABS ring itself.

3. trace wiring as far into the engine loom as possible, to ensure no open circuits.

4. Get a second hand sensor from the local wreckers, swap it over and see if it fixes the fault.

then go on from there emoticon

Re:

As Dave said Bob, the stick could have stretched the wire internally and lost contact that way.
How far up the sensor wire did the mechanic check? It could be damaged on the other end.

Try another mechanic for a second opinion, you never know, they might see something the first guy missed.

At least you know where to start looking.

I am sure there is already a thread about wheel sensors in the forum as you say you have read, next time please reply to that thread so everything is in the one area, not scattered all over the forum.

Re:

The answer to your question is yes, the ABS wheels sensors are the same for all T30 models, so when you go to get one from the wreckers, you can buy one from any T30 model. The ABS sensor would cost you around $50 bucks or less from the wreckers and it is the easiest thing to replace. You can do this even without any mechanic involved.

Re: Wheel Sensors ???

Robbo0001...I'm not 100% sure the stick caused the lights to constantly stay on, just that I noticed the lights after the stick incident. I can only assume they are related, even though the stick was about 150-200mm away from the sensor...stranger thing can - & have happened.
The Auto elec did test for a complete curcuit in the wiring - my apologies, I forgot to mention that!
Also pulled it apart when I picked it up from Auto elec (12mm bolt emoticon ) to check for dirt/mud/grease/grim, nice & clean, guessing Auto elec probably did it. Though trying to get the plugs apart is a !@#$, anyone know the trick?

Cooch...Down here, the Mech's just sent electrical work off to the Auto elec's anyways, go straight to the horse's head I figure emoticon
Will look for threads already started on topic in the future emoticon

jalalski...Thanks for the info re: interchangability (is that a real word??? emoticon ).
I only rang 1 wrecker yesterday because I wasn't sure.
He had 1 for $110 (incl postage), will try a few more today to see if I can find it cheaper.
Only 1 wrecker 'round here, next is 2 1/2 hrs away, & they deal mostly in the common type cars, commodedoors etc...the luxury of not living in the cities emoticon

Thanks guys for your input emoticon
