Max Boost in your X-Trail?

I've fitted a scangauge unit to the X-Trail and one of things I'm monitoring is the Boost level.

I don't think this is a true boost level though, and it would vary depending on your altitude, as I think its just taking the manifold pressure level and subtracting 14.7 PSI for the standard air pressure at sea level.

When I first fitted the unit I noted the max boost I could hit was 23PSI. It kept at this level for a number of weeks.

Recently I've noted that the max boost I can hit now is 21.8PSI and it won't go any higher.

I suspect that either the sensor that reads this might be a bit off or there might be something starting to go wrong.

I'm just curious to see if anyone else has a boost gauge fitted and what kind of readings you are getting for max boost?

Re:

Just tee off near your turbo that would be the best spot and give you a more accurate reading.
You should even go with a dual range boost gauge and switch, that way you can flick the switch when you need that extra push if towing or going up steep hills.

Re: Max Boost in your X-Trail?

I have a scan gauge too and my max is about 23 as well. I have a feeling the M9R is not boosted 23Psi, that seems pretty high for a lil stock diesel. Have you looked at the boost numbers when the EGR is cleaning the particulate filter? I have seen negative 5 while cruising along at 1600RPM.

Re:

In your picture thats not negative boost - it's positive boost. You can set the scangauge to show you the manifold pressure instead (I suspect that the boost gauge simply takes manifold pressure and takes off 14.7 or similar for atmospheric air pressure). I generally only see negative boost when idling or after shutting off the engine.

Since my original post, my max boost is now hitting 22.7PSI. I believe that if you reset your computer (I did a few times to fit accessories) that the max boost starts off lower and slowly builds its way up as it senses everything is ok with the engine.

As for 23PSI being too high - I don't think so, for a petrol is certainly will be, but for a diesel, it probably loves having the compression to help it burn the diesel better.

I that photo it is positive, I just put it up to show how I mounted the scan gage. Where did you put yours? I will have to keep the camera on hand for the negative read with EGR.

Ah, I understand. I've put my scangauge in the exact same place - Only had to drill one hole in the back of that pocket and I really couldn't see it being used for anything else...

Re:

i dunno about all your electronic boost gauges..

i have a mechanical one straight from the intake pipe, and i read 31 psi peak, stabilising to roughly 28.5 psi.

it is fairly accurate as when the boost goes up i can feel the torque. different amount of throttle sees different amount of boost. the gauge is fairly accurate, autometer stuff.

do i have a problem?

also the suggestion with a dual range boost controller = are you sure mate? VGT = no wastegate. as far as i know, the turbo is controlled electronically..??

Re: Max Boost in your X-Trail?

anyone here with a Manual that's recorded max boost?

after speaking to some nissan technicians (not Australian), i learned the max boost should be 20 psi on full throttle in anything higher than 1st gear, and spikes to 22 / 23 psi is normal. i am spiking to 31/32psi and full throttle at 28psi.. apparently it is out of spec , and possibly the reason for my lemon. THere is an impending court case but i'd like to know if anyone has recorded max boost in MANUAL.

Re:

got xtrail back from dealer today.

max boost now peaks at 26psi as opposed to 31, but i did mention to the technician that the boost levels might be too high. I guess there is a way to "downtune" it.
