They can do anything from a simple head/block skim to a full build. Have used them for the xtrail, evo and subaru. You could easily halve those numbers by doing the work yourself. If its just your head gasket that failed and everythng else is okay id remove the head and strip it, buy new valves (ferrea brand) and get Southside to skim the head, seat the new valves and the put it all back together with the top end rebuild seals, gaskets etc. (ebay kit, greenline) You will need new head bolts as they are tty. I'm lucky enough to own two xtrails however, so it being off the road for the few weeks I took to slowly & meticulously go through everything, one part/screw at a time, wasn't as stressful as it would have been for most. It has not been easy as we werent able to obtain a workshop manual, we bought a workshop cd off ebay but it didnt have the procedure to remove the engine, thankfully tho you had put up heaps of photos and it was the only point of reference we had. I hope your segment ends up in the DIY section. Our reasons for pulling it out was the fact that the clutch decided to finally s*** itself. Interestingly enough tho the flywheel still looks brand new, dont know how that happened, but alas we will change that too. Thanks heaps for all your pics and I hope yours goes well. They are amazing. While 4WDing on the beach recently my clutch packed it in. Sadly and embarrassingly i had to be towed off the beach and home . After searching for a xtrail workshop manual at all leading car shops i was unsuccessful, finally i succumbed to a workshop cd from ebay, sadly it didnt have the procedure to remove the engine. your posts have been amazing in my and dads journey to remove and replace the clutch and flywheel. thanks a million, the schwarzenegger axle nut you refered to, it was the same on mine, dad broke his torque wrench on the thing, he wasnt impressed, it was then that i found your posts and we took off the whole thing as you did. I just found it difficult to hold the disc straight while I torqued the bolts without it moving with the broom (which I tried but the handle was slightly too loose), but it can be done. I agree Mr President. This is not for the feint hearted, ive done alot of research on the net and making phone calls with soo many steps along the way, I have scoured the Internet for random tools and parts for the build and im lucky that ive had the time and technical skills to get me through. I certainly wouldnt be taking my thread as a DIY but simply as a pic and hints source for anyone unlucky enough to have to do this. I can reccommend doing this if you are in a situation where a Reco engine is too expensive and a rebuild by a mechanic would just not be cost sensible. I guess I could have just spent a few grand a bought a second hand engine but you just never know what your getting. This rebuild has been risky as im working with very limited space which in turn led me to buy a second gearbox as it took a decent knock when hit the ground one night. There is also a knock on affect, you replace one part and then something relevent to it will need replacing or work as well. Tools alone for this job will be pricey.. Heres a few which if you dont have will make the job impossible or extreamely hard.  - Torque Wrenches small and large. - Compressor and Tooling (very handy not essential) - Valve spring compressor tool (Blue Point remember, not big C clamp from Repco) - Various good quality socket bits (Torx bits, Male and Female) - Piston ring compressor, feeler gauges measuring tools, dial indicator gauges - Clutch alignment tool - 2 tonne jacks, stands, engine crane, leveler, engine stand - Angle gauges for TorqueToYield bolts, And a good range of basic tools and the list goes on. Also think about the amount of consumables - Diff, brake, engine, transfer oils (2 flushes and up to 4 engine oil.) - Coolant 2 flushes - Degreasers, gasket stripper and gasket silicons, threadlockers, bearing lube Blah Blah Blah. You get the picture,. Ive actually got the engine back in pieces again to do a retorque of the Head bolts which is a necessary evil but its not hard when you basically eat and sleep with the damn thing. (I forgot to post before but the Final torue value for the head bolts when you angle yield is about 190Nm.. tight SOB) My advice would be to regurally change the oil and dont load the engine up with too many WonderCure additives. Never use anything besides Genuine Nissan Coolant and if you have a fairly new engine run it in with various high and low revs with a Mineral oil and whatever you do dont let the oil be replaced with a Synthetic too early on in its life cause youll glaze you Cylinders and forever burn oil and use heaps of fuel for its life on earth, Cheers, (ill change my sig soon too) depends if i consider the Turbo Kit. Well I picked up the new gearbox and transferred all the bits off the old onto the new one. The seals were still in very good condition so I took the chance and used them. the throw out bearing was still good as the box had hardly been used. I have since installed it as the tranny jack turned up and ive spent the last few days buried in the garage busting my gut to have this car done by christmas. Everything went pretty well, its awkward working on only jack stands and ive now learnt that I can bend my arms and fingers in the strangest ways.lol. So to cut a long story short... It was time to go for ignition. Jumped in the car and turned the key..... nothing happened! Hmmm... WTF.... id blown the 30A Ignition fuse somehow. I pulled the Multi Geeker Meter out and tested circuits to find out that i had put the Earth to the Gearbox on the Earth to the Starter Motor as they are the same looking plug.. der!! There are no spares for these big Fuses so I used the ABS on and she worked fine until I can get another. I took a big deep breath and turned the key and she roared to life. the timing chain rattled a bit but its because im using fairly thin Diesel Grade Oil. I warmed it up and took it for an easy drive around the streets and evrything besides the big orange ABS light which didnt have a fuse in it went well. So I progressively reved the engine up to redline over an hour or so giving the engine time to heat and cool between blasts. It sounds great and for a 4wd its actually quite quick and spins the wheels through second gear if ya accel too hard. So all in all, the engine has been broken in Very Hard and no leaks, squeals, clunks or bumps are evident which im Excstatic about as im exhausted playing mechanic and busting my knuckles. I gave her a wash and a quick wax this morning and im going to treat her to a Chrome Exhaust Tip tomorrow.lol. Im going to do another 200 kays or so before changing oil to the Penrite 'Running In' oil. Ill do a compression test and post results after fully broken in. Its been a long and testing experience to do this and especially to have to pull the Gearbox out again has tried my patience and ability, but has paid off and to look back over the last two and a half months of trying to find a few hours here or there to work on it,chase parts, sifting through forums,super-gluing cuts on my fingers back together all seems worth it now.. Thankyou all for looking and commenting. If you live in Perth WA, you might see me drivin round with the Big 'Running Engine In' on the back of the car. (On a side note, I was following an old guy doing some blats on the Freeway and we pulled into the same servo, he wouldnt believe me that a new engine DOESNT need to be babied and that indeed should be 'driven like ya stole it' for a few hundred kays to seat evrything, maybe the Model Tford was a different story back then.lol.) Right next... Maybe a stereo upgrade and some slotted rotors. Mmmm Pod filter, exhaust, throttle spacer... Aaah the lists go on. nondisclosed_email@example.com (evorock)Wed, 07 Dec 2011 14:45:29 +0000 Re: T30 ti 02 5spd engine removal, stripdown and reassembly - Lots of pics -https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2058542,from=rss#post2058542https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2058542,from=rss#post2058542Right. I worked on the car this afternoon and I now have the Subframe down and the Gearbox ready to come out. It took about 3 Hours to do this which is not bad or overly hard with a rattle gun. I bought a Transmission Jack attachment to use with my trolley jack for 100 bucks delivered off ebay which will make things alot easier on installation, prob about a week to get here. I am still recieving quoted from those online parts search engines and the prices are ranging from $660 in QLD (lucky you guys) $990 NSW,delivered to perth. $1800 in Melb (I informed him that his price is double of other places and his response was 'Well people still buy em'.) A forum member Col was very helpful by pointing me to one on Ebay for $500, 200 Delivery to WA. Thanks for that Col, i was just a bit concerned about the high kays (300 thou someting) and the muddy condition. Ive ended up going with a place in WA for $900 plus a free axle. I have previously used these guys for a Throttle body which happens to be from the same car that the gearbox is from. It only had 36000 kays on the clock, which ive seen. Car doesnt even look that damaged. Ive gotta scrape some coins together for the box so itll be another week or so til i get it. Speak soon. Col. Yeah good point with the Cat/Exhaust. I thoroughly cleaned and inspected the manifold before reassembly. It looked good and not brittle. I didnt heat it up for long so fingers crossed it hasnt broken up. I was looking at the manifolds from the USA but I didnt want the expense of replacing the whole system to gain any benefit from it. Well guys.. I have run into a massive issue with the build. I worked on that gearbox selector for hours and couldnt fix it. Rang around a few mates and googled for a while. There is no reason why it wouldnt shift and the operation of the box isnt a difficult one. I tried to move the selectors with a scrrewdriver and they were very tight and they shouldnt be. At one pont a few weeks back I had the gearbox sitting on a an esky in my garage and I came out in the morning and it somehow fallen off onto the ground overnite. I didnt see any external damage and thought nothing of it. As I was moving one of the selector forks with the screwdriver in the gearbox a medium sized metal chip broke off and fell into the internals.. . I took a big swill of my scotch and calmly put the tools down. So.. in summary, I suspect internal damage or dislodgement when the box fell on the ground and to add to it I ruined one of the selector forks. I am starting to remove the gearbox now which is a massive pain. I have blown my budget now as I have to source a cheap 5speed Box from somewhere. im not even sure if i can remove the gearbox without taking the transfer and driver axles out. Gotta love these costs around Christmas . So. Ill just keep plodding along and keep updates. If anyone in Perth has or knows of a 5speed Gearbox for sale, please let me know, Cheers.nondisclosed_email@example.com (evorock)Sun, 27 Nov 2011 13:06:26 +0000 Re: manifold/cathttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2058433,from=rss#post2058433https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2058433,from=rss#post2058433Welldone Scott! good to hear she started up and runs fine. I hope you manage to sort the gear selector out. It sounds like you have just missed something. Are you going to stick with the Nissan standard exhast manifold/cat? I thought that it is one of the major concerns. Apparently, (someone correct me if I'm wrong) if they over heat it can become damaged and fine particles from the cat can get sucked back into the engine and score the cylinders. nondisclosed_email@example.com (colXtrail)Sat, 26 Nov 2011 09:31:41 +0000
