Replace Gearbox,Transfer Case and Rear Diff Oils. T30 5sp 2002

Gday all, Just thought id take a few pics when I changed out the drivetrain oils.
This is quite simple to do and will save you some dollars if your exy is out of Service Schedule. This procedure is for a 2002 T30 5sp but it would be similar for most models.

Alright here goes.

- Whip down to your Local Auto parts store and get yourself the following.
  - Manual gearbox Oil (I used Castrol VMX-80) Could only find in 4lts. Approx $42.00
  - Transfer case and Rear Diff oil (Castrol EPX 80w-90) 1ltr bottle. Approx $13.00
  - 'Tom Thumb' hand pump. Approx $23.00 This is a good quality pump.
  - Long plastic thin funnel $3-4
Image

Dumpster dive your Recycle bin and find some plastic milk bottles for when you drop the oils down. (two milk containers fro the diffs but maybe find something a bit bigger for the gbox as about 2.2ltrs will come out emoticon )

- Locate the 10mm Hex key plug on top of the gearbox and remove.
Image
The filler hole is next to my thumb (Its easier with a long extension bar and breaker bar)

(Note) - Always remove the Filler plugs first when doing these kind of jobs because if you remove the drain plug first and then manage to strip the filler plugs thread, you will have to call a tow truck as you cant get oil back in it emoticon

- climb up under the gearbox and locate the 10mm hex drain plug, remove it slowly and catch oil in container
Image

- Let it drain for a while (Good time to remove the filler and drain plugs on the transfer and rear diff)

- When drained put the drain plug back in and tighten.
- Place long funnel into fill hole and pour you 2.2lts slowly in.
Image
- Tighten nut and your done.

- Transfer Case
  - Assuming oil is drained, replace the drain plug back in with some Silicon Goo on the thread.
 Image
(Top hole is filler - taken from underneath car looking up)
Image
 - Take your 'Tom thumb' pump and fill it with 0.5lts of oil and place the tubing into the filler hole (easier to get to with Drivers wheel removed and sliding in over the axle)
Image
- Pump til oil starts to come out of the filling hole, do this slowly so you dont create air bubbles and a false level. emoticon about three minutes to fill.
- Replace 12mm nut with silicon goo and tighten, your done.

- Rear Diff
  - Climb up under rear of car and replace you 10mm drain plug.
  - Fill your hand pump back up with another 0.52 ltrs of oil again and place tubing in fill hole
  - Slowly pump oil in again til it dribbles out, Replace Fill hole and yep. done.
Image

- Overall the oils weren't too bad and were prob replaced before I took ownership. gearbox was pretty black tho.

Nice one. I thought so too. Ive actually bought a few more since then and use them for my lancer as well so I dont have to keep cleaning the bottle for different oils.
Im glad you found my post useful.

Just want to say a thank you to Scott for posting this thread with all of the photos. emoticon

I have just changed all of the drive-train oils as part of the 40,000km service on our T30 and this thread made it so much easier. Having actual photos to refer to as well as the Service Manual is big help.

For our X-Trail’s manual gearbox I used the fully synthetic Penrite Sin Manual Trans 75w85 which comes in a handy 2.5L bottle that costs about $35. (So not much oil left over that would otherwise go to waste sitting on the shelf for another 40,000km.)

For the Transfer and the Rear Diff I used Penrite Hypoid 80w-90 which is around $13 for a one litre bottle. I have used Penrite Oils previously in all of the drive-train components of my Defender and I have never had any issues.

For those that may be interested, the washers for the Gearbox and Rear Diff drain and fill plugs were about $5 each from Nissan. (Four were required in total.) Next time I will try and find some generic brand washers now that I have the actual size to compare them too. I knew that I wouldn’t have the time to go looking around for the correct size after I had dropped the oil so I reluctantly paid the $20.

So actually doing the job of changing all the oils was a relatively simple and straight forward procedure. However let me just say that it is MUCH easier to crawl under a lifted Defender to change all the oils than to crawl under an X-Trail. emoticon

So after only 40,000km I can say that the gear box oil and the Transfer Case oil were definitely much darker and discoloured and I am glad that I went to the effort to change them. The rear Diff oil didn’t appear to be contaminated and wasn’t much darker in colour compared to the new clean oil though.

Although the Nissan 40k service schedule doesn’t stipulate that the gearbox and transfer oils should be changed, I would definitely recommend that it be done. All up it cost just a little over $50 and took less than an hour to do.

Cheers
Mick

Re: Replace Gearbox,Transfer Case and Rear Diff Oils. T30 5sp 2002

G'Day,

Successfully changed rear diff oil on our T31 Diesel today. Used Penrite Hypoid 80-90. Simple job. Old oil still in good order after 98000Km.

Strangely, owners manual lists specification for diff oils but leaves a big "blank" under "capacities". I'd estimate around 500Mls .. so I guess not much has changed across the models.

Thanks a lot for the idea of leaving the new oil sitting in the sun for a while before filling ... even though we have changed our own drivetrain oils for many years in our other vehicles, for some dumb reason we never thought of doing this!! Ahhhh - simple solutions.

Do these things HAVE a transfer case??? we've never owned an offroader without "low range" before, so we had assumed that no transfer case existed???

Re:

Yes they do otherwise they can't send drive to the rear wheels.
Just look where the prop shaft joins the transfer case.

The transfer case is bolted to the transaxle where the front drive shafts come out from which is bolted to the engine.

I just wanted to say Cheers! to Scott, for his ridiculously well described engine rebuild and oil replacements posts, and thank God that I made the effort to actually check (and subsequently replace) them myself, even after having a major service done only a few weeks ago. I figured I'd also check the engine oil too, while I was at it. And, well, I'm sure the photos can speak for themselves..

5L's of this was in my engine!
Image

And I'm sure the little filter was still efficiently doing it's job..
Image

And of course, the rather proud moment I had (one week later), upon checking the engine oil and grinning at the comparison. Thanks again, Scott!
Image (Apologies for the unclear photo, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to identify that nice synthetic colour vs. the previous jet black =D )

I am also quite relieved to add that my diff, transfer case and gearbox oil were all positively beautiful! (not sure if that's exactly a fitting descriptor when talking about motor oils.. but hey, the car is 10+yrs old after all!) I probably should've taken a photo of all the healthy-looking oils in their tubs and catch trays before I filtered it all back in, haha. I will attempt to remember this for future edneavours.

Great write up, thanks for the effort.

Another tip if you don't want to use the pump (I used to use the pump...but no more). Is just use a funnel and hose, plug the hose in each end, pour in requirement amount of oil. Much quicker and easier.

I stand corrected, the filler holes arent as large as my previous cars. I ended up buying a Tom Thumb and it was MUCH better than the past pump I had.
