Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

The corner I installed it is really the only spot there is room. Pull out the removable compartment and you will see what I mean. To mount it on a side wall you would have to cut into the actual dash.

Re:

Have a look at the pictures above.
As Todd said, you'll have to cut into the underside of the dash to do it.

Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

I fitted a 3 position "cig Lighter socket" hub which includes an USB outlet as well into the dash compartment and stuck it down with 2 sided tape.
I can now connect GPS, rear view camera and have a spare 12V socket plus USB socket for any future use.

It is so much tidier than having leads hanging all over.
The rear view camera is wireless operated from a 2.4GHz transmitter mounted in rear bumpr area.
Anyway, both the rear view camera and GPS arer easily disconnected for storage and cables tiucked back inside dash compartment when not in use.
The hub is powered by a cable down through a hole in bottom of dash compadrtment and down to back of existing 12V supply outlet. Was easy to connect after lifting gear lever surround as described in other posts.

Also still leaves existing 12v outlet fee for when I use 150W inverter for charging mobile phone etc.

That looks like what I'll do. I ended up pulling the box out last night and had a look. A multiple outlet box will look neat and tidy in there. I will do it in te next few days before we head off on holidays.

Cheers

Does look good Dave. You lose a little bit of space but heaps of options. Well done.

Jalal, in my series I, these wires are brown and black. Was very fiddley especially with the connectors from the cig lighter. There was very little room or wire length to work with.

One thing I did note though, was the really poor factory wiring. There was bare wire exposed everywhere and really poor and tacky soldering done.

Doesn't matter now though. I spent the afternoon fixing it up and ensuring its all safe.

Thanks for the tips though.

I don't have a multimeter (and wouldn't know how to use one if I did) so how do I know which cable to attach to which? I know there's only two cables but I don't want to short out or break anything.

Cheers!

Kris,

Just close your eyes and wait for the big boom. That way you know you got it wrong. hahahaha emoticon

Just kidding mate emoticon

Nothing will happen of you connect them wrong, there won't be power going to the new power plug and that's when you will know that you will need to reverse your connection. emoticon
