Hello. I have just purchased a beautiful 2011 ti. I will be doing this mod as it has no steering wheel lights.
I will update when done.

Re:

You will love it emoticon

I was driving at night the other day and 6 years after buying my T31 I wondered how and why the hell Nissan Australia chose not to enable this feature as standard.

Re:

I got my T31 registered in 2013 but it is a Series 3 as there is no 4wd badge( unless it fell off !!) Any other means of differentiating Series 3 from 4 ?

Will try the steering wheel mod this weekend and thanks to the forum as I really thought there was a bulb to change in that dark steering wheel!! I was driving s 2013 Sentra the day before and there was lights all over the steering wheel!!

Same for the CVT gear Indicator!!

Cannot undertsand why Nissan would drop that feature - it should be part of the 'safety 'requirements to have these controls light up!

ANyway will give it a go!

Cheers!

Re:

News still not good! After few hours search could not find the problem...Checked every fuse possible and none blown...

Turn the key onto ON position all seems to go on put no cranking of the starter.

I cannot believe that sending 12 v to that electronic board to light up a few leds could trigger such an issue.

Not sure if my car is set up as yours but I guess it should..... I checked again that wire that I connected onto the RED wire going into the ESC switch does give out 12 V only when I turn on the headlights.....it should work !!

If any electrician could help on what could have 'blown'while doing that mod would much appreciate!!!

If i resetted teh ECU twice and no changes, it is like there is no 'starter'..

FIrst thing I checked was that famous 40 A ignition Fuse that someone else blew doing that mod but mine is still ok....

I used a AWG18 wire with a 2A fuse from the ESC RED wire to that empty slot in the white plug going into the steering wheel ( I checked many times on the photos that I used the proper empty slot. ).

I am lost.

I tried diagnosict with a bluetooth OBD2 but no faults shown. Next step is to scan the car with a professional diagnostic tool!

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Cheers,

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

Have you tried to "disconnect" the wire by removing your fuse to open-circuit it ?
That should put everything back the way it was and if it starts then you know there is something incorrect with those connections for your model.

posticon Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

Finally!!
After a good sleep and thinking about what was connected and what good have gone wrong, I had hard time believing that a simple 12 v wire connected to a PCB board would blow a big fuse and prevent my car from starting.

After a long search I found the 'fault' it seems that the previous owner did something to the electrical wiring loom and I notced that some of the wires going into the steering wheel main switch where full of isolating tape and after removing these noticed wires had been cut and 'rejoined' in a very unprofessional manner and when I did push the steering column covers back in the main wire came loose loosing connection! All redone now with soldered connection and heat shrink covers.

All good and Steering lights shining!!! Very happy! emoticon

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

It is so nice to have the lights up that steering wheel!! emoticon
I am taking the car out every night to enjoy it!

I still do not understand why on earth would Nissan leave that out?? To save on a piece of wire???? Cannot be possible...

And I would think for safety reasons those steering controls should always be lit!! Same for the gear indicator!

Re:

Just wired mine up on my 09 ST-L ended up just wiring it onto the ESC switch so it only turns on with the parkers , was quite hard to see the difference in color during the day to check if the lights were working , but once I cupped my hand around a button I could make out that they were actually working.

Also to save changing any existing wiring for the ESC switch I used a male spade connector pushed very snug in the back of the ESC connector. works perfectly, is nice and tight in there and no need to strip any existing wiring at all.
