Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

So, only 18 months after sorting out a piece of wire I finally got round to lighting up the steering wheel buttons thanks to all the excellent info here (went for the lights on with ignition option on page 1).

Question for those who've done the mod. How many of you decided to forgo the option of fitting an inline fuse and, if so, any problems to date? I had every intention of adding a fuse but I was so excited to finally see the lights today that I have left things be for now.

Also, what did you use as your plastic peg to secure the wire that sits alongside the pink wire? I have just doubled the wire over and pushed it alongside the pink wire for now and wrapped some electrical tape around the connections at both ends. Again, anyone else as slapdash as me and any problems as a result?

I'm thinking of adding a bit of cable tie to wedge the wire in place or the option shown by SofiesDad above but wondering how necessary this step is.

Thanking you in advance. Cheers.

No inline fuse and just wrapped with electrical tape. 4 years and no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for that Jalalski. Drove for a couple of hours today and the cabin didn't fill up with smoke so hopefully all is well.

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

I managed to get the steering wheel lights lit up today on my wife's 2012 T-31 diesel ( wife was very impressed) and then I thought I would have a look at the gear selector light. I got the gear knob off with no trouble but couldn't get the gear selector cover out. Does it just prise out or is there some trick to it? I didn't want to break anything !!

Re:

The gear selector is a bit more involved and will require to buy a new part to get it to light-up. Check out the information posted HERE

Thanks but I have read that post a couple of times already but I couldn't find where anyone says how to remove the gear selector cover ..... i.e. the part that needs to be replaced. Does it just pop out or is there a trick to removing it.

Re:

If you look closely you will see that the silver part is held by 4 screws to the centre console, so no, it's not a pop-up and you need to remove the centre console to remove it.

Re:

I have read through the entire thread and Im still a little confused as to which plug?
I stripped the cowling from under the steering wheel and I cant work out which is the air bag.

I plan to strip it again this weekend and post a picture, pewrhaps someone can point out clearly which is which?
