Re:

Just finished the mod to light up the steering controls, and it has worked like a charm.

Thanks to s970022 for the initial info, and thanks to Johnqqld for the info to get power from the ESC switch when the lights are turned on, the wife loves it now that she can see the controls.

posticon Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

Thanks to all who have gone before, I have now successfully lit up my steering wheel buttons and I have a few new ideas to add. I found the steering wheel cover easy to remove, but the wire block was not easy to dislodge from it's bracket. There's a square lock on the inside edge of it that keeps it from sliding out freely. It needed to be levered out with a flat screw driver. An alternate idea, that I didn't do, is to rotate the steering wheel 180 degrees (ie upside down). It's then possible to undo the screw holding the block to the steering column. Then you can gain access to the free socket next to the green wire.
A floppy drive power connector fitted neatly over the pin, so removal of the grey block from it's socket may not be strictly necessary. Computer power supplies with floppy drive connectors are now outdated and are usually thrown out. If you don't have one of your own, a Computer shop will probably have one for free. Pressing the retaining clip allows the connector to slide out freely as shown in a past picture. Personally, I like the idea of sliding a clip over a pin rather than pushing wire into the hole and hoping it connects well.

I joined a Jaycar 500mA fuse holder in line with their jointer. It's a length of clear shrink tube with a solder bleb in the middle. Heating it with a lighter melts the solder onto each wire and shrinks the tube around it.

I didn't like the thought of meddling with either the ESC switch or the downhill assist switch. The Headlight tilt switch seemed the safest option. But the retaing clip is on the door side of it's mount and not easily accessible. I went to our friendly Panel beater for help. He popped off the triangular plate between the dash end and the driver's door. Voila, access through a frame opening to the retaining clip. With a screw driver it was easy as pie to slip out the plug. I quickly accessed the red wire and pressed on the guillotine double jointer from Jaycar. It worked first time.
Now I'm trying to access the illuminatable gear shift panel to do part 2 of the restoration of normal night lighting.

Thanks guys for all the exploring of this process that you have done over the years.

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

Hello guys,

I bought my T31 (4WD, Petrol 2,5l, Auto, 2013) 3 months back in Nissan dealer in Baku and when I was at Service centre for 1000km checks I asked electrician to light up both of them but he was not sure that was possible. It is very frustrating that a brand new car does have such a simple function... I remember I had it on my old mercedes C class...

Now guys a question to all who modified steering wheel and gear selector: Are these lights factory prefitted or do I need to buy replacements with prefitted lights?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re:

The lights/LEDs are already there, they just need power to light up. I have no idea why Nissan decided to export them with the steering lights disabled.

Re:

Thanks Jalal!
I have read in owner's book that Nissan produce 3 types of X: type A, B & C.
Type A is for Japanese market, Type B for general Asian market and Type C is European market.
Don't know why we get type B...
Type C is fully equipped and have lots of features like 360deg bird view camera, built in DVD monitor, parking assistant, head lights washing, Bluetooth, etc.
Nissan has reduced type B down even to simple USB port on car entaertainment system- it is very upseting- a brand new car of 2013 does not have it....
And the issue is even if I decide to install all these missing features the Service Centre will declare of Warranty to be voided.

Hey all,

I have recently purchased a t31 2013 model (2 months ago)... The steering wheel controls have no light, i have tried to do this mod and there was no succes what so ever... Now ive been doing auto electrical work for MANY years so im starting to assume that the empty socket had no connection to plug in to in the first place??

I have ordered a tamper screw kit so i can undo the bolts and remove the wheel controls so i can figure out if there is a positive and negative connection for LEDs... However as stated, this was unsuccessful for me

I have no idea why it didn't work for you Branko as I followed the instructions provided in the first post and then followed Johnqqld advice to pick up the power form the ESC switch and it worked well. The only thing I can think of is that you didn't get the wire in far enough under the steering wheel to make contact properly.

Re: Re:

I am located in south brisbane, travel won't be an issue as much especially if i can get it to work... Like i said, i tried to get it and nothing lit up... Took it down to nissan out of curiousity yesterday and they claim this mode does not have that function at all... And when i say function i mean as in there are no lights installed in the controls at all emoticon

Thanks for the reply,

Branko

Re: How to light up the steering controls (T31 IV)

Lights working, sweet!
Here are some up dates of my experience. The connection to the steering lights socket was the most problematic, nothing a good multimeter can't fix. This method will lessen the chance of two things happening: no contact to the pin or wire and no joy, or stray wires contacting other pins and causing fuses to smell bad.

Step one:
Unplug the grey plug, leave the Yellow one alone (SRS). You have to push the lock lug fairly firmly to move it. See the pins in the socket
Image

Step two:
Note the end of the plug. The wire will feed through the square hole above the T shaped hole that has the metal "jaws" in it.
Image

Step three:
Trim back enough cable as shown and separate out 15 filaments of copper, anymore will be too fat to pass through the square slot. Twist tightly and check for length
Image

Step four:
Feed the wire twist through the vacant slot shown in the original post on this thread.
Image

Step five:
Use a fine jewelers screwdriver to push down and fold in the end of the wire into the corresponding T hole with the jaws in it. The wire in here will be pinched by the pin you see in step one and stop the wire from pulling/falling out.
Image

Step six:
Push the grey plug back into the socket. It really needs a good hard shove. You should not be able to pull out the wire you just made now. If you can, start again. I got it first time.

Step seven:
Flatten a female pin (see Jaycar for parts). Attach wire with inline fuse 500mA. Shove it down the side of the pink wire on the left hand side socket.

Enjoy the pretty lights! emoticon
