How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)
When you are driving at night, you will find there is no light on the steering wheel for X-TRAIL. Here is the simple way to light them up. It might take you approx. 15 minute to finish the work. All right, let's start.
1. Here is the steer wheel without lights
2. Remove the starter cover
3. Unscrew the screws under the steering wheel and remove the steering cover by pulling down very hard.
4. Under the wheel next to the starter, there are 2 white plugs. The one on the left is connected to the SBS airbag, so DO NOT touch it. The one on the right is the one we need to unplug it. Push hard on the buckle in the middle and pull out the plug.
5. On the right of green cable, there is free socket. This is the socket we need to connect later.
6. Prepare a wire by peeling off the skin about 3cm and twisting the centre core tightly. Insert the wire into the free socket and fold back 2cm of cooper wire. Place the cooper wire onto the valley on the plug. When you plug in, this will make the wire contacted and stable.
7. There is another connector on the right hand side of the steering. Unplug this plug.
8. Cut the wire in suitable length (15cm) and prepare it as step 6. But fold the centre core into half and twist it again. This will make the contactable interface larger. Insert the cooper wire into the socket of the pink cable occupied and put in a plastic stick to make it stable.
The last but not the less, tape up the wire on the cables with electric tape and undo the screws and steering cover.
Well, up to this step, you have got rid of the blackout on your steering wheel.

Are you saying that Nissan Australia disabled the steering control light for some reason?

Do not try this on any model prior to the current model.
Just blew a major 40 amp fuse in the engine compartment.
Hope I can find a replacement today, might have to bodge it up untill I get to Nissan during the week.

1. What fuse was that and where it is located?
2. Were the wire colours in your Series 1 corresponding to the wire colours described in this DIY mod?
3. Did the steering controls light-up at all before the fuse was blown?

The fuse was an IGN (ignition) fuse, its a triple 40 amp fuse in a green enclosure. The middle fuse blew. It is in the front engine bay fuse box.
The colours are exactly as in the DIY thread, same connectors same colours.
No I had the keys out untill I tried it.
It was a dead short with power going to both terminals.
I have temporarily soldered the fuse together untill I get another one, looks like an expensive fuse.
Its now about a 400 amp fuse rather than a 40 amp, ha ha.

Fair enough Tony,
I reckon this DIY Guide was copied from China and since they manufacture the T31 (series 1 and 2) over there, the wiring could be different.
I reckon we need to do a bit of home-work before this mod is given the tick of approval and we need to correspond these wires with what they actually do in the service manual.
I don't think am gonna try this in Series 3 and 4 either until I see this in person. It just doesn't make sense for Nissan to have the steering control lights illumination function available but not hooked-up. Why on earth would they disable this feature if it was there??
