Re:

When would be a reasonable time to decide between new rotors and just machining them?
My rotors haven't been changed in a very long time and instead of the front, the back pulses/shakes

Re:

You can only machine rotors a maximum of two times, all depending on how bad they are and what thickness the rotor will finish after machining.
The shop that machines them will tell you before they start whether you need new rotors or not.

Re: Rotors

On personal note, there is no way I'd ever have rotors machined, never ever.

Generally brake rotors will come to your attention due to shudder felt through the steering wheel and pedal under braking application, which is a sign of warped discs.

The other brake issue you may experience is a ghastly grinding noise during braking, caused by a foreign object caught between the pad surface and rotor, or even more commonly when your pad(s) have worn down so far that the metallic wear indictors are scoring a groove into the rotor surface with each brake application

Either way, machining the rotor reduces rotor thickness, meaning they will heat up quicker and increase the likelihood of rotors warping and or cracking. If you need to machine due to warping, once machined the rotor will warp in a sooner than it did the first time.

Therefore, instead of wasting $50+ to have your rotors machined, spend that money more wisely on replacing the standard rotors with a far superior replacement such as DBA Slotted Rotors and at the same have better quality pads such as BENDIX 4WD fitted.

The standard Nissan rotors on the XTrail are well known to be soft and a bit on the light duty side. With this in mind, I had planned to have mine replaced pre-delivery, but due to supply issues I had to wait about 10 weeks, by which time I'd done 10,000km, so they were replaced at the scheduled service.

Based on experience with DBA Slotted Rotors fitted to work vehicles and vehicles I've owned, DBA Slotted's are about the same price as the inferior genuine rotors.

In the case of the XTrail, genuine rotors are around $200 each and DBA Slotteds are approx. $110 ea which means there's no logic in machining or replacing genuine rotors.

Re:

You can safely machine the rotors once and once only and they would last quite a distance after that. As long as you stay within the minimum specified thickness of the rotor. You will have plenty of time to upgrade to a more superior rotors with time, so unless you have spare cash lying around which you are itching to spend, there is no point upgrading straight away if you can get away with machining your rotors which in most cases would be the front ones, as the rear ones should last for the life of the car ot at least for a very long time.
