As long as you stay within the minimum specified thickness of the rotor. You will have plenty of time to upgrade to a more superior rotors with time, so unless you have spare cash lying around which you are itching to spend, there is no point upgrading straight away if you can get away with machining your rotors which in most cases would be the front ones, as the rear ones should last for the life of the car ot at least for a very long time.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Thu, 03 Oct 2013 12:24:56 +0000 Re: Rotorshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2078282,from=rss#post2078282https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2078282,from=rss#post2078282On personal note, there is no way I'd ever have rotors machined, never ever. Generally brake rotors will come to your attention due to shudder felt through the steering wheel and pedal under braking application, which is a sign of warped discs. The other brake issue you may experience is a ghastly grinding noise during braking, caused by a foreign object caught between the pad surface and rotor, or even more commonly when your pad(s) have worn down so far that the metallic wear indictors are scoring a groove into the rotor surface with each brake application Either way, machining the rotor reduces rotor thickness, meaning they will heat up quicker and increase the likelihood of rotors warping and or cracking. If you need to machine due to warping, once machined the rotor will warp in a sooner than it did the first time. Therefore, instead of wasting $50+ to have your rotors machined, spend that money more wisely on replacing the standard rotors with a far superior replacement such as DBA Slotted Rotors and at the same have better quality pads such as BENDIX 4WD fitted. The standard Nissan rotors on the XTrail are well known to be soft and a bit on the light duty side. With this in mind, I had planned to have mine replaced pre-delivery, but due to supply issues I had to wait about 10 weeks, by which time I'd done 10,000km, so they were replaced at the scheduled service. Based on experience with DBA Slotted Rotors fitted to work vehicles and vehicles I've owned, DBA Slotted's are about the same price as the inferior genuine rotors. In the case of the XTrail, genuine rotors are around $200 each and DBA Slotteds are approx. $110 ea which means there's no logic in machining or replacing genuine rotors. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Charlie250)Thu, 03 Oct 2013 11:06:19 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2077381,from=rss#post2077381https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2077381,from=rss#post2077381You can only machine rotors a maximum of two times, all depending on how bad they are and what thickness the rotor will finish after machining. The shop that machines them will tell you before they start whether you need new rotors or not. nondisclosed_email@example.com (cooch t31)Sat, 31 Aug 2013 07:21:59 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2077379,from=rss#post2077379https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2077379,from=rss#post2077379When would be a reasonable time to decide between new rotors and just machining them? Depending on the age of the rotors and expected lifespan of the OEM items (previous in the forum would indicate that it is not much) then go by the local cost of machining vs replacement with a heavier duty version for you. I've sat behind people who rest a foot on the brakes for the entire length of the downward incline. {Their brakes would be cooked at the bottom} That tends to disrupt my rhythm of allowing speed to build, then apply brakes to bring speed to below my desired average but then allow gravity to bring that speed back up, then apply the brakes again in a regular rhythm which allows the brakes to cool between applications. By touching the brakes to shed speed downhill and then regularly taking the foot off to allow them relief to cool down, they do not overheat (and warp). Riding the brakes on even a few Km of a downhill run is likely to cook them enough to get red hot rotors. Side effects of that excess heat are always unpleasant. I learned very quickly in old cars with leading edge drum brakes that the moment they got hot they failed to function at all, but the lesson that "heat is the enemy to brakes" is still applicable today.nondisclosed_email@example.com (DogTrail)Sat, 27 Jul 2013 18:30:57 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076375,from=rss#post2076375https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076375,from=rss#post2076375The question was asked by a member from South Africa guys! So my owners are going to fit me with DBA 4X4 survival series t2 Front and t3 rear rotors, they should last the rest of my lifetime, and will help me stop a lot lot quicker and more consistently, I'm also getting Bendix 4X4 pads. Have a great day, from Augustus the X Trail. nondisclosed_email@example.com (AugustusXTrail)Fri, 26 Jul 2013 22:43:12 +0000 Re: front brake shutter on 2.0 dci 2009 modelhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053513,from=rss#post2053513https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053513,from=rss#post2053513thks for feedback tony what worry's me is that my xtrail only has 36500km on the clock, i have arrange to take to someone to have them skimmed, the dealer is crazy with the price they quoted me. reall hope this sorts the issue regardsnondisclosed_email@example.com (ddtoit)Thu, 09 Jun 2011 21:49:34 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053472,from=rss#post2053472https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053472,from=rss#post2053472Discs warp in a varioys of conditions. Heavy or hard quick braking, towing, quick changes in temperature or driving with the left foot on the brake pedal. Unfortunately its not a warranty issue as its like the tyres, brake pads and wiper blades, consumables. You can take the car to any tyre fitter as they can machine your discs, or your Local Nissan dealer can do it too. Just mention it to them when you service the car next. Here in Australia you can expect to pay around the $100 mark.nondisclosed_email@example.com (cooch t31)Thu, 09 Jun 2011 05:47:34 +0000 Re: front brake shutter on 2.0 dci 2009 modelhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053467,from=rss#post2053467https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053467,from=rss#post2053467is this a major thing to do to machine the discs regardsnondisclosed_email@example.com (ddtoit)Thu, 09 Jun 2011 02:10:02 +0000 Re: front brake shutter on 2.0 dci 2009 modelhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053466,from=rss#post2053466https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053466,from=rss#post2053466how does this happen the warping of the discs?? car has 36000km on clock and still under warranty? regardsnondisclosed_email@example.com (ddtoit)Thu, 09 Jun 2011 01:59:51 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053401,from=rss#post2053401https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053401,from=rss#post2053401The discs are warped and need machining.
