Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

Tony,

You're correct.

The rain sensor and for that matter the auto-headlights sensor is the same unit that is located under the base of the rear view mirror and it uses infrared signals to detect rain and poor visibility.

Based on this information, the windscreen glass itself is standard and if damaged can be replaced with a standard windscreen.

Pierre, you need to go back to the dealer and tell them that there is nothing special about the rain sensing windscreen and that they will need to either re-use the rain sensor stuck to your existing windscreen or order a new one.

Their lack of knowledge is costing you heaps of money and there is no way a new rain sensor would cost $1000.

If they can re-use the base of the mirror which is stuck on the windscreen, I can't see why they can't do the same for the rain sensor.

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

Thanks for the info guys.

I will follow this up today and see what they say about reusing the sensor.
Will keep you all updated.

Translucidus i too was in shock about them not even having windscreens in stock, i actually also went in there to get my steering wheel console fixed as it was loose at the bottom of the "T". They were going to try and make me wait for this also as there were no spares of these in the country. Which also makes me think that they'd rather buy in new parts than repair. Obviously saves them time in the workshop. They told me that they would just swap it out from another new car to avoid the wait. But in the end they told me it was just a bracket not installed correctly.
This car has been out for almost 6 months now and the lack of basic components in stock is very disconcerting. You really wouldn't want anything to go wrong with your car because it will be a long wait.

I think i may also look into consumer affairs and see what i can do there.

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

So i approached my nissan dealer armed with this new information regarding the sensors.

I was told that it may be possible to swap the sensor to a standard windscreen, however the service manager thought it not a good idea as the sensor is unlikely to work perfectly. Something like the sensors are calibrated in the factory. He said that since the car is so new it's probably not worth it and i should just get the whole thing from Japan.

So i'm going through insurance and hoping that it will take 6weeks.

Re:

Pierre,

There is nothing in the service manual that suggests that the rain sensing windscreens are any different to the standard one. The sensor itself work on infrared technology, so it is not dependent on the glass at all. If I was you, I would call Nissan Customer Service and enquire about this.

In fact, I will post this question to Nissan Australia myself now to get a definite answer because there is no way I will agree to pay a Grand everytime my windscreen gets a hit.

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

Thanks Jalal,

i've given Nissan Customer Service a call, i basically told them my story and asked what what can i do about it. They couldn't help me. The person i was speaking with obviously has very limited technical knowledge about the car but also couldn't point me in the right direction as to who to speak to or what to do. I really don't think there is much else i could do other than wait for the new windscreen. Perhaps i could get another glass company to install a standard windscreen and get them to reattach the sensor. But i would fear warranty issues with a car less than a week old.

I will definitely put in a complaint to consumer affairs about nissan not stocking basic parts for cars they are selling.

If Nissan Australia can give you an answer it would be much appreciated.

Hi Pierre,

I got a response back from Nissan and they're waiting for you to call them (again) so they can help you out.

This is the message I got:

quote:

Hi Jalal,

Certainly never good to have an accident but just days after picking the car up is really unfortunate.

Whenever the windscreen is replaced the sensor body which clips on to the glass (which already has the base) is required to be replaced. This is to ensure that it functions correctly (i.e. when in auto mode).

Could you please ask your friend to give out Customer Service team a call on 1800 035 035? That way we can provide accurate information regarding what part is required for his Nissan X-TRAIL and the cost.

Cheers,
Sally

When you call Nissan Customer Service please mention that you were asked to call them by Sally from myNissan website and don't forget to get the name of the person you spoke to and a case reference (if they offer any).

If the reply is still not favorable, I will chase Nissan again.

You need to ask them a clear question:

"Can the dealer fit an ST-L or ST (Series 3 or 4) standard windscreen on your Ti and only order the mounting base for the rain sensor from Japan instead of ordering the entire Ti windscreen?"

Re:

I noticed today that the series 3 & 4 windscreens on the ST variant are diferent to the Series 1 & 2.
Series 3 & 4 has a blotted sun strip section that goes around and below the rear view miror.
Series 1 & 2 have a thin black line (3cms roughly) that meets up with the mirror.

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

So i got my new windscreen fitted on Friday.
Everything seemed fine... until it rained.
Now i notice the wipers aren't working correctly any longer.
I now only have a high and low setting and the sensors aren't picking up any moisture on the windscreen.
So i take my car back to Nissan this morning and get a call an hour later and find that they installed the sensor wrong without the required gel. However they can get a new one in a few days from Sydney.

Now i'm confused as in the first place when i cracked my front window they told me an entire windscreen had to be ordered and with that came the sensor. Now they seem to be able to get the sensor separate. Or if not they are going to reuse the sensor they installed on Friday which they didn't want to do in the first place with the original sensor on the cracked windscreen. So i really don't know what's going on.

I will ask them today when i go pick up my car and see whats happening.

Re:

Have you called Nissan Australia Customer service as per my post above? They were waiting for your call to explain the whole process and try and save you some $$$. I guess it's a bit late for that now that you had the windscreen replaced and probably forked out the money already.

The windscreen sensor is definitely a separate unit to the windscreen as I understood from the service manual.

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

Wow what a horrid run you have had.
I cannot believe they have the hide to hit you with over a grand for a screen, I do have automotive glass coverage havent needed it yet for the Ti Exy but did have to replace the glass on my prodo after I was caught in hail, Toyota rain sensing screen was 360 and the rear was 290 both OEM and work like new. PDR did the repairs and I cant fault any of their work, best part was AAMI gave me screen coverage for free when I changed over to them as a "safe driver" reward, 20+ years without an at fault claim.
Glad I made the change after feading your horror story mate, sorry it dosent help you but maybe you might wantto look at some of the competition to NRMA? lots of insurers that want our business :/ just a thought....
