Re: No high profile tyres available 18" Rims

There isn't a lot of clearance with the standard 225/55/18's as it is, so I reckon going to a higher profile 60 series 18" tyre could be troublesome, the ADR for a start, not to mention the lack of sidewall profile and the fact that the wheels are alloys. I would doubt that the 18" alloys would stand up to much off road with low profile even A/Ts. I have seen a case before xmas last year of an alloy that was cracked inside the rim from an impact which was only visible when the tyre was removed.

I live in southern country NSW and run two sets on my Series 3 TL Diesel, 18"'s for highway, and 16"s for off road & snow. Perfect set-up, apart from a bit of elbow grease every few weeks...keeps me fit!

As for your insurance company...just tell them. The issue they will have is if any modification you make goes outside your state's regulations or the manufacturers specifications making your vehicle illegal and technically unroadworthy. As Xtrails also come with 16" steel rims as standard on some models this won't be an issue in my opinion. You could also go and order a new tyre placard for a lower spec Xtrail with 16" rims like an ST if you change down to 16" rims. This trick is fairly common place.

The NSW RTA vehicle information standards FYI (most other state's guidelines would be the same or very similar I reckon)

Yeah you are right, nothing in the ADRs but insurance agents pick and choose the rules that suit them. So in the interest of having financial back up it's important not to upset the insurance people.

The insurance agents/companies are bound by Australian Design Rules like everyone else, so they would need to present a bloody good reason for rejecting your claim or insurance policy if you do decide to drive with genuine Nissan 16" rims which are perfectly legal and 4WD rated.

This was a mistake on my behalf... the tyres were 225/[55/b]R18 instead of the 60 profile.. so i'm sorry for stuffing that up...

With regards to the 16" rims, I solved the problem by actually looking at the tyre placard, rather than taking the tyre guys opinion and seeing that 16" rims are perfectly fine... I then promptly called bob jane and amended my order to reflect a set of 16" rims (load rated as per the X-Trail wheels) and a set of 215/65R16's....

So apologies for the confusion and many thanks for all of your persistence in setting me straight emoticon

Hopefully this thread will serve others as well as it has served me emoticon

Cheers,

Jeremy
