Planning to GO in May 2011 need some suggestion to get home

Hi All
The Cook (a term of enderment for my beautiful wife) are leaving on a short trip (hahahaha) in early May.
We will be driving to Adelaide, put the car and us on the Ghan and getting off in Alice Springs.
Spending a couple of weeks around Uluru, Kings canyon and western Mcdonald ranges, then back on the train to Darwin (thought we'd use the train as an experience) in Darwin for a week or so then to Litchfield NP for a week.
On to Kakadu for a week, then Katherine and Mataranka (for my 52nd birthday) and then to Daly Waters for 1 night.
Onward to Cape Crawford with a helicopter flight to the Lost City.
We will the be driving to Mt Isa via Barkly Homestead (1night there) and staying for 3 nights prior to going to Lawn Hill NP for a week, then to Normanton for a few days, and then to Mt Surprise for a week and a bit.
So far, when we leave Mt Surprise we have been away for 70 days, we then have 4.5 weeks to get home.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where/which way to go?

Last year (2010) we drove from Melbourne to Mildura, Broken Hill, Tibbooburra (Camerons Corner), Noccundra, Thargominda, Quilpie, Windorah, Jundah, Stone Henge, Long Reach, Winto Hughenden, Muttaburra, Barcaldine, Emerald, Springsure, Cararvon Gorge, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Brisbane via the coast, Ipswich, Stanthorpe, Tenterfield, Armidale, Tamworth, Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Orange, Cowra, Young, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Echuca and then home.
By the way the exy we go brand new in April and we left in early May. It ran like a dream and we were about 1500 over the 10,000k service when we got back. When that was done the dealer said they could not find a thing wrong.
Anyway we just don't want to go over old ground again unless we have to.
We don't tow a van or trailer, but stay in onsite cabins when we can. We have found the cost is not much different to having a van, with extra fuel costs, rego, insurance etc.

Therefore any and I mean any suggestion we will welcome.
Thanks

Re:

What about the middle way from Central Queensland down to Toowoomba and then through Goondiwindi down to Armidale or head east just before Armidale and take the not so close the coast road down?
