T31 Keys

Hey Guys,
Been a while since I was on here. Hope everyone is good.
I saw there was a section that covered the cutting of keys for the T30 but that was an '04 post and I wanted to get some opinions on the T31.
I'm finally healthy again and surf and kitesurf and obviously can't carry a transponder key with me. This means trying to hide a transponder key somewhere on the body or in the bushes and hoping that no one finds it or sees me hiding it.
What I want to do is get a non transponder key cut so that I can take that out with me in the water, give it a quick rinse when I come in and unlock the door using the keyhole. That way I can hide the transponder key in the car. I could leave it in a bag on the beach but when my friends and I are the only ones there it becomes obvious which car the key unlocks.
So... To the questions. Can I get a key cut anywhere?
Can I unlock the door with a non transponder key?

Hi Dave,

You would probably need to buy the blank key from Nissan and then any locksmith shop will be able to cut the key for you and it will open doors but it won't start the car...obviously.

Dave
I was at Supercheap on the weekend and saw a device which mounts onto your towbar with a combo lock so that you can place your keys credit cards etc, as soon as I saw it I thought of you! From memory it was called a master lock. Sorry don't remember the price although this might suit your needs if you have a towbar fitted

Re: T31 Keys

So you need a key to unlock your keys to the car, kind of pointless isn't it. I suppose it will only be 1 key.
Maybe its a good idea to get a hitch lock pin as well, otherwise they will just pull the pin and score a gooseneck as well. emoticon

Re: T31 Keys

Tony,

With the Master Lock (the hitch type for example), you don't need a key to lock away the car key, as it's a combination dial lock, the pin that lock the towbar goose-neck can also be hidden inside this compartment along with the car key.

Re: T31 Keys

Soooo. I contacted Village Motors Service depatrment @ Petie who said they don't have any way to order a blank without the transponder... Disappointing.
Next step. Stopped off at the key and shoe repair guy on the way to work on Friday and he contacted his key provider. He had just been asked the same question for a Navara. Dropped in to see him this morning to see if he had any luck. Key should arrive in the mail today and I'll drop in to get it cut tomorrow.
Thanks for the other suggestions but I don't trust alot of those things. I've seen plenty of those combo locks cracked so I feel safer having the key on me.

Re: T31 Keys

More mindless info for those who like this type of locking mechanism.

They are easily opened. The code you get with it is only one, the reverse code is found within about 1-2 mins. The is also another code available.

I only use combo locks to divert those after a quick grab or to slow my works mates down from getting into my tool box.

Dave, you have the best way with the non transponder key to get into your exy.
