Replacement Shocks for T31

I was wondering if any T31 owners have had their original shocks replaced yet and with what brand they put on?

My exy has only about 25,000 to go before it hits 100,000 km's(and believe me that will not take long) and I do know shocks only are good for 100,000 km's before needing replacing so thought I would start to get some replacement ones sorted out real soon!

Love to hear if you have put on any after market ones at all!

Regards Scot

Scot,

Who told you the factory shocks are only good for upto 100K??

I have seen T30 xtrails with over 250,000kms on the clock on the factory shocks, so unless you are transporting bricks everyday, nothing should go wrong with your shock for many years to come.

I agree with Jalal on that one, it all depends on what sort of driving and load carrying you do.
Although, when I got the lifted coils in, the installer did say cause of the 35mm hight, the shocks will deteriate quicker. Now that there is 35mm less travel in them.

They offered me a Pedders shock at the time, I think by memory they quoted me just over the $1000 mark to replace with a better shock with more travel.

Be careful there as there have been a few reports about Pedders wanting to replace perfectly good items to make money.
Check out the ACA sites for it. Rather interesting story and goes with what they have said to me before.
Previously they tried and failed on me when I had my pintara. They didin't expect a female driver to know what was in her car. (I did about 90% of the work on it, unless I didn't have the time or tools to do a replacement on it,(exhausts)).

I was just going on past cars that I have had and most needed to have the shockies replaced after 100,000 thou!

I might get better life out of these than I expected then is that correct!

Re: Replacement Shocks for T31

Even my VN commodore did 250,000 on original shocks.

Dealers and repair shops were always demonstrating how weak they had become by bouncing the front of the car.

Sure they bounced soft by hand - but the trap is they are designed to, as they were progressive rate shocks. The rougher the road the firmer they became and the smoother the road the more soft they would behave. Terrific behaviour that never changed for the life of the car. I know the were still good because on corrugations etc the car never moved off line in corners etc.

I believe now it is legislated ADR wise that certain safety components are mandated as very durable eg stainless steel exhausts (no fumes in car after a few years like steel ones), shocks that should last forever etc etc.

I would recommend thinking VERY Carefully before thinking your shocks are weak or accepting advice from a repairer or aftermarket guy who just wants your money and doesn't care if your factory tuned shocks (perfect for your car) are still in great condition.

Remember manufacturers spend Millions of dollars tuning suspensions to match the rest of the car (eg stability control, braking behaviour etc) and to behave correctly in many varying on and off road conditions. To replace one of these components with a generic Pedder or some other after market "Improvement" is unwise to say the least and usually false economy. This goes for exhaust upgrades and other mods that seem worthwhile, until they impact on some other vehicle aspect eg durablity.

I'd recommend not changing them (if ever) until you get on road behaviour that shows one or more has failed eg excessive whallowing behaviour or skipping out on corrugated bends more than usual.

I'd suggest they will probably last the life of the car.

Re: Replacement Shocks for T31

I have been trying to replace the rear shocks on my X-trail with some better quality shocks (the standard are rubbish when they get hot). Wow is this a task and a half. Tried a few 4x4 places and they basically had no idea so just said 'we don't have anything that suits the X-trail'. Surely eye to eye shocks are not that difficult to match.
Anyway I then tried ARB. After initially telling me they had ordered them in, I chased them up after a week and all of a sudden they don't make eye to eye shocks for the X-trail. They tried to tell me it's struts on all corners. After a small argument I told them I would take photos to prove it. Another week has passed and the goons still have no clue. I have called probably 10 times over the last 2 weeks chasing this up until finally today they tell me they can't help me. Seriously ARB has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Absolute joke. Man it annoys me what a strangle hold they have on the 4x4 market.

On the phone to Pedders and apparently the Trak Ryder shocks are due to be released for the T31 within the next 2-3 weeks (still waiting for confirmation). So that's the likely path for me.

Re:

Hmm Nissan just replaced the rear pair under warranty for me at the 50,000 kms service in September.
At the service check they found 1 was weeping and put the new ones in that day. They did have to get them sent to the dealer to do this, so it was no small effort on their part.

Re: Replacement Shocks for T31

Just in case anyone was wondering what the rear shocks on a T31 look like I pulled mine off and took a couple of pics
ImageImage

I even sent these to ARB to show that they are a pretty common shock type. Still no interest in trying to find a match. Bring on the Pedders TrakRyder.
