100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
I recently had my T30 serviced (about 1000k's ago now) and have started to have some excessive rattle during cold runs (2-5 deg c), during acceleration, and even during mildly warm days (15 to 18 deg).
So I started to look into it. My last service receipt stated 100W 50 oil went into it.
Owing to the fact that my noise sounds suspiciously like tappets being slammed back down by the camshaft, I thought this could have a little to do with it.
Upon consulting my service manual, it states 5W 40 for all temperatures - this one seriously long way off 100W 50.
I went and queried the dealer about this, and they said it was probably just a hiccup on the sheets and reassured me that the correct oil would have been used.
I promptly went home and checked the dipstick, only to find oil thinner that the vegetable oil I use to fry my chips, dripping away from the dipstick before I could read the level.
My question is: does this sound correct? or am I just paranoid?
I plan to drain and replace the oil myself with Nissan spec oil.
I did search the forums for the answer to this next question, to no avail:
What brand and viscosity do Nissan recommend for the QR25DE?

Re: 100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
I would drain it and change the oil to be on the safe side anyway. Little cost for an added peace of mind.
You can use Castrol Edge 5W30 (more details in THIS thread and others if you search on engine oil)

Re: 100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
Having had an oil change drama with a dealership I would contact their service department by email or fax (so you have it in writing) advising them what you have found and ask them what they plan to do about it - make sure you get the response in writing.
In my case the oil change was short by 2L indicating that the oil level was not checked nor was a road test done, unless the driver was really ignorant - its hard to ignore that OIL LOW message flashing on start up although the person that normally drives the car did manage that. I immediately put 2L of the correct type of oil in the engine when I worked out what was wrong and the dealership did pick up the car and redid the oil change as well as refunding the cost of the oil and the entire charge for the 10000km service

Re: 100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
Thanks for the input, I will contact them tomorrow, and if I can't get a timely response, I'll do a change myself.
Not a particularly difficult task to change oil.

Re: 100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
I have sent a polite but firmly worded email to the dealership, with the oil charts from the service manual attached, along with a scan of my last service receipt.
Either I have had bad service or I have been incorrectly invoiced, either way they reply should be useful.
If not, I'll change the oil to Nissan spec and send them the bill.
Thankyou once again for the assistance, I'll keep you posted on the results.
The dealership in question is salecitymotors.com.au

Re: 100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
Maybe they used 10w 50 and hit an extra 0 on the keyboard by mistake, double check the brand and viscosity they used.

Re: 100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
Have been to speak with the dealer again, and have arranged to leave the vehicle overnight one night next wek so they can hear the noise themselves.
Apparently, this invoice system only has one category of oil on it. They claimed to have put 7.5w30 (Nissan light) oil in it.
Still I recall being able to read the dipstick before the oil fell off it in the past.
So in effect they have invoiced me incorrectly, still warrants a boot in the hind quarters.
These guys are the same guys that sold me the car unregistered claiming 12 mnths rego. They had a steel toe to the rear a few days later.
Still under extended warranty, which covers tappets, so I should be ok in any eventuality.

Re: 100W 50 as used by Nissan service center.
Just checked my Nissan Service receipts to see what mine said and they just call it engine oil, no mention of viscosity. Maybe a Nissan service thing as not to confuse themselves when invoicing.
Also 100w oil is thicker than diff oil ( usually around the 80w mark) so it wouldn't be runnig off your dipstick.
