Re: T31 CVT - How many Kms have you done trouble free?

91000 kms. I checked complete service history at Nissan dealer where car was serviced every 10000 kms and no mention of any CVT problems.

Re: T31 CVT - How many Kms have you done trouble free?

* 171000 km so far - now powerloss at steep hills or towing the float (rpm caped at 2000), howling (been there since ~90000 km), flaring at idle
* Still works for the daily commute
* Nissan quoted 7000 AUD for the CVT replacement

Does anyone have a cheaper option around Melbourne?

Re: T31 CVT - How many Kms have you done trouble free?

You could try replacing the CVT Fluid. Have this done at a Nissan Dealer and ask them to make sure the level is correct. Howling, whining noises can be caused by even a slight overfill!
The fluid is a special Nissan Fluid and normal Transmission Fluids will damage a CVT.

I believe the fluid should be changed every 100,000kms (my dealer said they leave it to 120,000kms - the manual says 80,000kms). If it was changed around then get the level checked as if there is too much fluid and there will be problems with foaming etc which leads to low oil pressure in the transmission and the howling noises. A Nissan Dealer can also check if the fluid is "within specification" or degraded.

You could also try cleaning all the bugs and flies out of the transmission cooler, aircon condenser and radiator etc behind the front grill/bumper; there must be quite a collection, blocking cooling air after all those Kms. Your symptoms sound like overheating at the least (towing or uphill). Perhaps get it done by someone who knows how if your aren't confident. Often a good squirt with a hose from front and from in the engine bay side is enough. Keep squirting until no more crud emerges!

Re:

Thanks for the tips emoticon I found a shop in Thomastown VIC which had another look so here we go:

- The CVT oil has been changed twice within the last 60k (my dealer does that with every 40k service) so I ruled that one out.
- Also the cooler seems to be clean (already had a thorough wash some time ago)

The mechanic found two things:
- CVT: the bearings/pulley are wearing out hence the noise in higher gears (or equivalent). Can be fixed for 4.5k which is cheaper than a 7k replacement
- Powerloss is not due to CVT however there was an error with the throttle body. I don't know where to find this thing but I'll figure it out and give it a good clean.

EDIT:
Just found on the German Xtrail forum that somebody fixed the powerloss issue by exchanging the Drosselklappenpotentiometer emoticon ... It's the sensor in the throttle body which measures the current angle.

Cheers

VERY unusual for a Dealer to change the CVT fluid every 40,000kms!!! Very expensive and probably unnecessary.

Perhaps get another dealer to check the fluid level as this one issue can cause wining/noises if the fluid is Over filled. Many times the noises go away when a little CVT fluid is drained.

Don't do this yourself as correct level is critical.

Re:

I gave the throttle body a good clean on the weekend and I think this has done the trick in regards to the loss of power. Since nobody actually reported a complete failure of the CVT and my first car drove 370k with a noisy transmission before something else broke, I stop worrying about it.

Looks like Dandenong Nissan tried to sell me a $7000 CVT replacement when the actual problem was a dirty throttle body which can be fixed in 15 min with a $10 carby clean can.

The guys who pointed me in the right direction were these: http://www.manuelautomatics.com.au/ seemed to be pretty competent and they quoted $4500 to replace some bearings and fix the pulley-system. However they also said it doesn't need to be done immediately.

... now I have to find a really steep track around Melbourne to test it.

Re: T31 CVT - How many Kms have you done trouble free?

Fantastic!

171,000kms is as much as I've ever got out of an auto transmission (holdens but); give or take 10,000kms.

If it's still going then that is great and we/you may be surprised how long it will actually last.

Recent reading has said these CVTs are bullet proof ( ??? ) and a CVT is a difficult transmission to design so that it doesn't have certain low speed rattles (this is to do with the very light fly wheel, the gear train configuration plus the normal power delivery pulsations from the motor's crankshaft at lower speeds) and some other noises.

I too have stopped worrying and just enjoy the car.

Nissan CEO finally admits problems with CVT (read article HERE)

Nissan Australia should follow suit and fix all CVT defect without giving headaches to impacted owners!

Re: T31 CVT - How many Kms have you done trouble free?

Thanks for the article.

It says more about customer satisfaction with the way it operates rather than an actual fault in the CVT.

I would LOVE them to come out and say: - "If you have a CVT that rattles at low speed with clunks and rattles going slow over tracks/uneven ground, or rattles when the throttle is 'feathered' at around 50 70km/h we will replace it with one that doesn't and still won't when it 'wears in' after about 30,000kms " !!!

As usual nothing is really admitted by Nissan Execs or Nissan Australia - the Journalist did mention "Quality issues" in the interview in the link.

I guess it's a start that Nissan will actually trial and discuss CVT "refinements" before they are introduced.

Perhaps that's why the new Pathfinder has horrific problems with the CVT in USA.

It would seem very little liaison between Jatco (70% Nissan owned) and Nissan Execs - UNBELIEVABLE.

Re: T31 CVT - How many Kms have you done trouble free?

Mate in Devonport with a 2 1/2 yo Dualis which has the QR20/Xtronic transmission combo, started getting strange noises... dealer unable to diagnose, but last week, (presumably after contacting Nissan Technical) they offered to replace the CVT.. said it would take about 3 weeks.. are aprentices really that slow?

Its hard to believe that they are still experiencing problems with near new vehicles & tranny's!
