Pulling to the right when accelerating
Hi again
So I'm booked in this week for the front left wheel bearing replacement and a service. I just discovered the first date in the service manual is may 2007, so I'm out of the 36 months warranty
The other problem is the car is pulling to the right when accelerating hard. eg. from the lights. When I was down the track last weekend, when I planted my foot to overtake a road train, I had to turn the wheel LEFT so the car didn't pull too far to the right to overtake!
While coasting or even accelerating mild - medium, the alignment is perfect.
The tyre shop first noticed it when fitting a new front tyre. They also did an alignment. I've also had the tyres rebalanced and swapped since then.
Is this CV joint problems, or axle or diff? Any advice?
thanks

Re: Pulling to the right when accelerating
Iain,
Try selecting AUTO mode and see if it does it again. I bet you are only experiencing this in 2WD mode.

Re: Pulling to the right when accelerating
Guys,
What you are experiencing and I did as well before upgrading to wider tyres is called Torque Steer and it is explained in detail HERE
The exy does suffer from it and it could be related to the tread pattern of your tyres.

Re: Pulling to the right when accelerating
Thanks Jalal, I was reading about torque steer, but since I didn't have it before I didn't think this was the issue. Interesting you say tyre tread can have an effect, because the tyre shop fitted new tyres to the front, aligned and balanced, and that's when they noticed it.
Let's think about it, the transfer case is toward the left? Which means the right part of the axle would flex more, hence turn slower under changing torque. So slower right wheel means car pulls... right!
I'll ask the mech to check it out anyway. And unfortunately AUTO mode won't help for doing 130km/h down the highway (yes it's legal in certain parts of the territory) cause it disengages after 80km/h I believe.
However Scaryann if this is your problem it should pull the same way. So one or both of us has a different problem

Interesting that yours is left and mine is right. Something's not right, er, wrong, there

Re: Pulling to the right when accelerating
Torque steer can only happen when the car is stopped to fast acceleration, and usually through the firs couple of gears. Unless you have 500hp under the bonnet.
It can't happen when doing 100km/h, you definately have an issue with the front end.

Re: Pulling to the right when accelerating
Iain,
The torque steer am talking about only happens at take-off. For you to experience it on the move and while over-taking someone is very unusual for an exy. Are you sure you weren't driving a Porsche?
