Roof bars and fuel economy

Hi,

Am considering fitting a set of roof bars to my T31 for occasional load carrying use and potentially with a roof pod for occasional camping trips etc. However for 95% of the time/kms the roof bars are likely to be attached to the vehicle but not serving a purpose.

Have read various reports about the effect of roof bars on fuel economy ie. that fitting roof bars increases fuel consumption by 5% or 10% or greater (depending on what you read).

Hence my question - does anyone have any personal experience or confirmed figures about the difference that fitting roof bars (bare - no load or pod attached) has on fuel economy in the X trail?

Obviously would expect an increase in fuel consumption with a load attached and am not worried about that. Given the aerodynamic shape of the bars, however I wouldn't have thought that bare bars would have caused a great increase in fuel consumption. If they do I may reconsider fitting them.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Slazar

Re: Roof bars and fuel economy

Thomo,

The roof bars by themselves won't make a huge difference in terms of fuel economy, but carrying the roof pod to its maximum capacity of about 450L will definitely impact on your fuel economy.

As a comparison and during one of my camping trips when traveling with a roof pod on a highway run I managed to get only 320kms out of a full tank of fuel compared to about 490kms without it.

Wind direction and your traveling speed play a big factor as well.

Re: Roof bars and fuel economy

I noticed no change to the fuel economy when fitting the Bars to Phillipa's Exy, the only change was some minor wind noise at around 60km/hr. Since then I have fitted a roof basket Foxwing Awning and a short conduit for the awning poles with no noticeable change.

I rarely use the roof bars so took them off. Made a noticeable reduction in wind noise at highway speeds.

Re: Roof bars and fuel economy

G'day all , my post is not about fuel economy but roof racks, needing a set of racks i done the usual rounds to buy a set for the x-trail but balked at the prices quoted $308 rola to $340 gen,so out came a set from a previous 4x4 that being a prado with the gutter clip. what i did was measure and drill the gutter clips at the 55mm centres, made some stainless plates that went under the bolts and screwed them down with 6mm ss bolts, measured the width and cut the bars to length, i used one rack end as a template and cut the holes out of the 4 clip out sections and slipped them down into place over the ends and presto a very neat, cheap job which i'm pleased with and looks like bought ones . I hope this helps other people to get some cheap racks,i'd post some pictures if i knew how .Mick
