I've gotten itchy feet again

Considering how much I drive for work, i've gotten itchy feet again.
Must travel...

This time, going to Townsville for work and meeting a friend there.
3 days of island hopping, then down to Rockhamtpon to repack the car.
Off to Brisbane for the next 2 days, then down to Sydney for 3 days or so and pester other friends.
Time to drive to Geelong and start on the Great Ocean Road, sometime around 4 days later we'll be in Adelaide to meet up with more friends who will take us over to Kangaroo Island for the weekend.
Then its north to Ayres rock so my friend can see it, then back to Rockhampton via Mt Isa.
Few days here for my friend before she flys back to the US.

3 weeks of driving in a big circle.
Should cure me for a few weeks i think.
I average between 400 and 2500kms a week, depending on what breaks at work.

Re: I've gotten itchy feet again

You will love "KI"
You need an exy down there as some of the "Roads" can be a bit suss
Corrogations can be a problem along with the "marbles" small little round ironstone stones if you go off of the bitumen - Hell you have to leave the black top to see the good stuff!!

Tips
Fuel - This is only available at Parndarna, Americian river, Kingscote, Penneshaw. These are all at the eastern end of the island. Dont be fooled the island is bigger than you think, it takes one and a half hours on the black to get from one end to the other at 110k
Take food and water on day trips, there are no shops apart from the major towns listed above
and the "Corner shop at Vivonne"
Check that spare!

Seal Bay is not worth the money! (Foriegn Tourist Trap)
More seals at Admirals Arch and they are always on the move(Will need a parks pass)
Vivonne Bay - Must Do
Stokes Bay - Must Do - Go through the rock cliff face
If you are a "Foodie" go to the "Andermel Marin Farm" restaurant - Brilliant Marin Platter for two emoticon emoticon emoticon

Too many good things to mention - Go and enjoy emoticon emoticon

Cheers Joe

Re: I've gotten itchy feet again

Oh yes, and our 3 days there will not be anywhere near long enough. This part we understand, so thats why we are being escorted (all in my car mostly likely) by friends in Adelaide. But they have only been there twice so far in the past 5 years or so and are still exploring.

We will definately be going to some of the nice food places, as we are both foodies. Only a slight problem is that I have to avoid all shellfish and lobsters with my allergies.

Yup 2 spare tyres, as always while in my car and on holiday.
Work car is a differnt matter, they pay for both down time and the vehicle. Although I have managed to destroy 4 tyres in 20mins/40kms dirt road. 3 were completely ripped (2 different places) up and the 4th lost every balancing peg on a grid. Lucky for us we were in mobile range.

I'll taking a land EPIRB again, but not the sat phone. Since there will be no off road aftwe KI and I have the UHF if we need help after we leave Adelaide and take the very long way home.

Re: I've gotten itchy feet again

I had a short look at the north end of the Flinders Ranges on my visit past there in August last year. Although I don't think we will get alot of time for massive side trips this run. Due to the dates we have to be places and meet up with people who are taking time off work to show us their 'backyards'.

Sorry Scot, we won't have alot of spare time in Brisbane this time. But I do go there a few times a year myself. I have been watching when the meets are on and hoping one would fall on a long weekend that I am not on call for. If i have money leftover i'll be down that way later in the year again anyhow.

I think there will be alot of sleeping in the passenger seat and change driving to get to places since we are both the types to stop and look at anything shinny.

My friend will get a few days on the reef, a few days in Sydney, a few days on the great oceans road, a few days in Adelaide(KI) and a day or 2 at Ayres rock. Then the last 3 days winding down from all that driving and getting drunk with more friends in town here (since we are skipping them on the way south). Oh and a great appreciation for vastness of this country. I have a feeeling that she won't go on another road trip for a while.

Re: I've gotten itchy feet again

... And a friendly Adelaide welcome .... going by most traffic here it would involve sitting in the right hand lane at 20km/h below the posted limit, or tailgating while talking on a mobile phone emoticon

Enjoy KI, and make sure you drop into Dudley's celler door in Penneshaw for a feed of local critters, and some Porky Flat Shiraz emoticon BYO chuck bags for the ferry emoticon

Remember when in SA - Indicators tell you what someone did, not what they are about to do emoticon
