I agree Dave, but when the wheel is fully extend excess pressure is on the sway bar meaning it is the only thing stopping the wheel from going any further.
This could pop out the knuckle very easily.

Re: Front sway bar disconnected by itself

2 years ago, my X made a loud knock everytime I make a uphill hard left turn (my driveway). I brought it back to Nissan for inspection 3 times before they can find that the sway bar bolt jump a tread under that kind of condition. Bolt and screw replaced, problem solved. It took a lot to get the Nissan maintainance manager to believe in me and 3 trip for the same fault is just too many.

X Temple, did you happen to have taller suspension?

Dave, not yet. I popped into a local place which advertised "4x4 suspension" with a large sign on the outside wall but they haven't done suspension for years... I was recommended to try a suspension place such as Pedders by another mechanic. Seeing as I now have every Thurs+Fri off work (well, with a 2y/o) I should be able to pop into my local Pedders (didn't get a chance to during the last 2 weeks) so hopefully it'll be fixed soon. I do notice considerable body-roll around ANY corner (I was extra careful through the 80k zone through the "Kiama bends" tonight in the wet)...

Re: Front sway bar disconnected by itself

Forgot to update this thread...

A couple of weeks ago I got Pedders to put in their heavy duty sway-bar links. All up was $160. Very immediate change in handling (obviously) and the only minor problem (which was fixed immediately after a test-drive when I returned) was a strange knocking noise coming from underneath after they'd done it, which seemed to get worse (more often) as I drove further, and made no difference whether I was on smooth flat road, accelerating, turning etc. It turned out that one of the locking nuts (because they are adjustable length) was not tightened. It was retightened and locktited, and hasn't made a noise since.

Now if there was only a way to easily disengage these links for extreme 4WD use emoticon

Basshead,

It was the original sway bar jumping a tread. Only once drove about 8km on dirt road with a gang consisting a Discovery 3 and a Camry! Perhaps the daily trips to school were more punishing, may be is the lady driver!!

Rich

The lower ball joint on the right hand side of my X popped out last weekend. After 2 years of the car lifted, including 7 weeks in Central Australia and another 2 weeks in NE South Australia this year, it popped out when I jacked it up to change a tyre!

Seems to me that with a normal setup (heavy duty springs or not) the length of the strut is what stops the wheel. But with the spacers, it may well be the sway bar that stops the travel - and thus the stress on the ball joint.

Pedders quoted me $55 for a side and did not say anything about them being heavy duty. Nissan want $52 and so that is what I am picking up on Tuesday.

Kev & I were already aware of the short length of the ABS sensor wires when we installed the spacers.

Do you think that a total lift of 75mm would require extending the sensor wires?

Re: Front sway bar disconnected by itself

It depends how you do it, Henri

The 50mm spacers take the sensor wires to the limit when the suspension is fully extended (because the wheel is 50mm further from the body to which the wire is attached). Adding the stiffer springs (which I think I saw from another thread is what you want to do as well) will add height normally because they are stiffer, but they will not increase the distance from the body that the wheel travels when the suspension is fully extended (that is, the wheel is off the ground).

So, as long as the spacers are only 50mm out of the spacer/springs combination you should be OK.

The spacers mean that the wire always has less give than normal because the wheel is always 50mm further from the body that it would be otherwise. I have snapped the rear right sensor wire twice when driving on a dirt road - I don't thing the wheel was off the ground (the road was too smooth for that) but I wonder now if a rock hit the wire and there was just not enough give in it. Maybe... probably would have snapped anyway. See the full story at my Central Australia trip report

Re: Front sway bar disconnected by itself

Extending the abs wires is simply a matter of cutting and soldering/ heatshrinking the required extension length, then ensuring the wiring is adequately supported from damage.

I have had to repair a torn ABS sensor loom....nil effects from the soldered repair. If you go up higher than 50mm, which I intend to do at a later date (uprated springs or coil jackers) its definately worth doing, as it puts less stress on the wiring.
