GL-5 gear oil in manual gearbox I recently picked up some synthetic GL-5 gear oil thinking it was synthetic GL-4. Searching the internet there seem to be quite a few myths surrounding the use of GL-5 gear oil but I am not sure whether to go aherad and use it or not. Has anyone used a synthetic GL-5 oil in their manual exy?

Re: GL-5 gear oil in manual gearbox It's generally not advisable to use a GL5 gear oil where it's not recommended by the manufacturer.
GL5 oils are usually recommended for hypoid differentials - front wheel drive transmissions, which is essentially what the X Trail transmission is, usually specify a GL4 oil. Nissan specifies GL4 for the transaxle and GL5 for the rear diff if I remember correctly.
GL5 oils have more extreme pressure additives than GL4 oils because of the shear forces inherent in hypoid gears ( rear diff ) and these additives can have a bad effect on the syncromesh cones in a manual transmission. You would most likely experience a deterioration in gear shift quality and potential damage to the synchro cones in the long term.

Re: GL-5 gear oil in manual gearbox Thanks for the advice Glenn. I hadn't yet used the oil so I took it back and swapped it for GL-4 - Nulon 100% Synthetic 75W-85 Smooth Shift Manual Gearbox Oil.

Re: GL-5 gear oil in manual gearbox Hi Wayne
I believe that Nulon is pretty good - I was planning on using it myself when the transmission oil needs changing.
Maybe you could post your experience with it in terms of whether it makes the gear change better / smoother etc.
PS Slight correction to my earlier post GL 5 is recommended for rear diff and transfer case in the X Trail

Re: GL-5 gear oil in manual gearbox Well I've been running the Nulon 75W-85 Smooth Shift GL-4 gear oil for about a year now. It's a little hard remembering what the gear changes were like before the oil change but I am very happy with the Nulon oil. 1st to 2nd can still be a little notchy but most changes are lovely and smooth and I would happily recommend this oil.

Re: GL-5 gear oil in manual gearbox I have had Nulon in the rear diff and Auto transmission for around 10000 kms, andhave had no issues.
Going to be changing the engine oils on all our cars to a fully synthetic 5W/30 Nulon. Looking at a 20 Litre drum for three services a year, makes it easier and more cost effective when doing your own servicing.
Cant fault Nulon oils, or customer service at all, from my experience to date.
