Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

While not totally dismissing Alan & Jalal's recommendation, if it was me, I'd be contacting the retailer that sold you the head unit - the fact you've isolated it to the head unit by trying another one (which worked fine), in my opinion, would indicate the head unit is faulty. You might have abit of an argument with the manager about it, but if you can go back to the shop with the spare head unit (still got the factory one at all?) and prove in front of the manager's eyes (ears) that it's his head unit that's causing the noise, then I am sure he has a legal obligation to replace it.

Just be aware as I already mentioned with my Alpine amp's, there's the possibility it's a trait of that particular model of head unit, so you might need to replace it with a different model or brand to keep the noise at bay.

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

When I install stuff - especially audio I would use a wire for earth, linking them all together.

I don't like using a screw or bolt for each units earth.

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

hey guys,

thanks for the replys, and thanks for the thread jalal.

i have tryed running the same earth from the head unit to the amp, but made no difference.

i have also tryed most of the things listed in the thread jalal put up, attaching a noise filter on the rca's did nothing like i said before. i also tryed a noise filter like on the bottom picture of the thread but that did nothing at all either.

also i tryed attaching an earth on each negitive of the rca's, but still no difference.

i agree with you here rich, i belive there is something wrong with the rca;s outs on the headunit which is a bugger because i baught this headunit online, (i dont think i can say the website) but when called them, they said any problems is kenwoods fault, so i called kenwood and they said that i have to go through that online shop. (i think ill have a big arguement on my hands with them)

i am also thinking about just filling out an online return form from kenwood, and sending it away with my headunit to them with the recipt.

FJRKYM, do you mean having the same earthing point for both the amp and the headunit?

thanks guys for your feedback! i cant wait to get this all sorted!

thanks, brenton

Yes, earth all units together using a earth wire and then to a common point or better straight to the battery.

The battery is one big capacitor that works like a noise filter..

Sounds like a head unit to me...

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

I thought of something else to try, but it may not prove anything...

Remove all the RCA leads (probably from the amplifier end would be easier to access) and connect them up one at a time (with the engine running, of course). Start with the left one - does the noise occur as soon as the RCA is connected? Does it still make the noise if you move that RCA to another input on the amplifier? Try another (right channel from the head unit) in different amplifier inputs - does it also do it? Also try it with sub-out RCA's only (you might need to get to the back of the head unit again unless you've already run them in preparation for when you add a sub).

Hi Brenton,

Here is a link to MP3Car.com where the problem of ground loops is discussed with a methodical approach on how to find where the fault is.

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

thanks for all the replys,

the annoying noise is no longer there, i resolved the issue the only way i could.

i am using the speaker cable input on my amp for the front two splits, and rca for the sub.

i know that its a loss of quality using the speaker cables instead of the rca's. but i dont have any other choice

thanks for everyones responses and help.

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

I have installed a few amps and one thing that is not related to the audio at all but caused me problems in a few...
Check the earth connection from the bonnet to the body, also the earth cable from the alternator to the chassis. I was surprised to see the x-trail has no earth cable (in many cars a thick flat copper weaved cable, solder tinned with a hole drilled for a screw emoticon

The best test is an earth bond tester or a low resistance multimeter.
The bonnet can act as a big antenna and radiate the interference into the whole wiring loom if it is not earthed. If I fit audio reinforcement I will do this.

MikeSpike: x-trail has no earth cable

i think you'll find they have many, also in this forum you will find a thread with a few people havent issues with dirty earths and sanding paint and rust back etc. also the bonnet acting as an antenna would only affect the audio system if in radio mode correct?

also ive heard that some head decks for example the JVC EXAD i believe had similar issues with poor sound clarity, something about running on DC voltage and have a prob with putting out a small amount of AC voltage and cooking any speaker/amp its connected too.

i would check and clean the coupled earths in the engine bay (timing case and intake manifold from memory). just for the info i ran my power wire down the passenger side of the car with all the other wiring to the back, ran RCA's (and remote wire) down the dash and centre console, under the carpet under the drivers seat and then follows the rest of the wiring under kick panels to the back, earth is about 2ft long and is mounted in near the spare wheel well on a clean earth.

i have a voltage regulator and earthing kit (earthed to battery, throttlebody, timing case and ECU bracket) that was there before the big system went in so dont know if that could help u or not
