New Year Picnic - D'Aguilar Range

I woke at 5am, anxious for the day to get under way, checked out the weather and the forum - all good.

All packed, left the house right on time and made our way to the first meet up point and arrived right on time. Scot & Wendy were there already, grabbed a quick bite to eat, everyone else arrived and intros all around, grabbed a takeaway coffee and a donut for morning tea and headed out to the cars and set off right on time. Woohoo, everything was going great, looks set for a great day. Image

About a click up the road towards the second meet up point, Vicky was looking at the run sheet and asked where Ray and Marion were as I had them marked on the list for the first meet up point, DOH!!!!!!! Quickly jumped on the uhf and Scot said he would go back and get them and I would continue on to the second meet up point with everyone and wait with the rest until they arrived. So, much as I didn't like to let someone go back and fix up my mess, I drove on, embarrassed that I'd driven off without some of the party. Kinda got the feeling I'd driven off without putting the kids in the car. emoticon

Anyway, after an uneventful drive to Dayboro we arrive and guess who was waiting for us, yes, you guessed it, Ray and Marion, doh, doh, doh!!! On the phone to Scot and he was on his way towards us and arrived in 15 or 20 mins or so. The wait gave us time for intros all around and a chance for a few to go for a comfort stop. We managed to get underway pretty well much right ontime anyway.

We set off under the competent directions of Vicky who was on map reading and navigation duties for the day and a fantastic job she did I must say, we did not get lost once all day! emoticon

The first part of the track was uneventful with mostly forestry trails, flat and well graded it seems, no sign of the rain we have been having up here lately. We did manage to find a bit of water though and made short work of it

Image Image

We then headed for Kluver's lookout for our first stop and photo opportunity.

Image Image

After a short break and a bit of tree climbing for Thomas we headed off again. More forestry trails and then we turned onto Jacky Creek road and behold, we got some good 4wd-ing stuff. Some good climbs up and down, some rutted roads and a chance for some newbies to get some confidence.

Video of Kev trying to spin his new Geolanders.

We turned left and headed for Diana's Bath (a popular swimming hole it says). When we got there, the way was blocked off by gates and there was a long walk down to the creek and swimming hole and as the clouds were building up we elected not to go, and so we had some morning tea. As we were there the clouds came rolling in and the thunder increased so we decided to head off as we had the A Break section to do before getting to the Gantry for lunch.

Image Image

A little bit of tooing and froing on the way up A Break as we came across some oncoming traffic but everyone conquered it with relative ease (well done John on your maiden off road trip), not bad considering the book says it is a hard section of the track and low range and high clearance is recommended - we said boo hah to that.

Image Image

After A Break, we made our way to the Gantry and set up for lunch and a chance to relax and reflect on the day so far.

Image Image

After lunch we had a group discussion regarding the rest of the day and agreed to continue the trip onto Woodford. After a trek to the lookout overlooking Somerset and Wivenhoe dams we continued on mostly forestry road but did stop when I noticed a puddle on a side track. Revhead Kev and Moe went for a puddle jump and got a few people splashed with mud and had a squelchingly good time.

Onwards we went to Rocky Hole and trundled down to the watering hole for a few pics and a rest.

Off we took and soon come across an old quarry area and a few of us had a few drives over some hills and we all lined up for a group photo.

A short drive later we got to Broadwater picnic area and a welcome comfort stop. Here we met some guys with a Pathfinder, handed out a forum card and chatted for awhile and then headed off to Woodford where the trip ended. Farewells for everyone and we headed off on our way home.

Thanks to everyone who came along on the day, especially Kev, Anna Maree and Thomas from Sydney, John and Beryl, first timers and I hope you enjoyed yourselves and I didn't rush through anything. I hope I gave everyone a good drive and it was a pleasure to be the leader for this trip, it is my favourite in the dirty weekender book.

So, until the next trip, enjoy the report and sorry about the lack of pics, darn computer.

Thanks for arranging the trip and for the excellent report Jamie, with more great pics & videos - all the better to see what I missed. emoticon
On the day of the trip I ate a whole block of chocolate, for breakfast! Frustration I think they call it. emoticon

I was unable to attend because of this. The car is still at the workshop despite being there for the whole day. Hope they figure it out soon, at this rate I might be available for a trip this coming weekend emoticon emoticon emoticon except I'm now late returning home.

Well done guys. Awesome trip and trip report.

I started watching the first video of Kev and thought his exy was having that whistling noise Julie was complaining about with all the whistling of birds in the background LOL emoticon

Very well written. A bit disappointed that my pink chair didnt get a mention emoticon
I would definitely say that A Break was awesome!
It was nice to catch up with the old and meet up with the new members.
Pics look great!
Thank you everyone for making it an exciting trip!
Jamie and Vicky-thank you for planning an awesome day for all of us emoticon

Side-note- Personal Pics and Files=External hard drive is the only way to go. Way too many viruses and funny things on the internet that put our computers at risk these days.
