Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review

further updates...
Ipod & iphone seems to play good, although when I plugged the iphone in it said that this device doesn't support the iphone, do you want to switch to flight mode to reduce static noise. I said no and it worked perfectly. This was a quick test though so once I use more I will update.
Also it seems like the SWC doesn't want to work properly again for the up button. When the up button is pressed it changes the tracks down, as well as the down button. Volume is working ok which is what I use the SWC for anyway although will contact supplier on monday and see what they say.

looks like the Elinz electronics unit is worth the punt at its price point. think I will get one and if it doesnt work to my liking flog it on flea bay.

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review

hold off Don...On the way to our outing today listening to the radio this weird nose would take over everything, it would last for a few seconds then go back to the radio. went to CD after a few minutes the noise came back on, it was on and off for about 10min so turned it off.

When we got to our destination I reset the unit for our drive home...on the drive home same thing. I have recorded the noise on the trusty phone so I will call them tomorrow and play the weird high pitch noise and see what they have to say...stay tuned.

Hi Samuel
Thanks for the warning, was going to pull the trigger this weekend, so might just re-holster at this stage. look forward to your findings.

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review

OK once I played the noise on the phone straight away she said its the sound when a speed/red light camera is near - it picks it up from the GPS, you can actually turn it off and only show a warning sign when in GPS mode. The noise is too annoying, so ive turned it off so that I can confirm if she is correct.

She also got back to me about the SWC, she said if your car works on a can bus system (which I think the xtrail does - can someone confirm?) then the SWC may not work 100%. Im happy that the volume works correctly. I will try again and reprogram and see how I go.

Well, with that piece of information it means this unit won't work in the Merc, as it definitely has the CAN BUS system for the steering controls.

I can also confirm that all x-trail from 2005 have the CAN BUS system and the only way to get the steering controls to work properly is with a CAN BUS Interface (like THESE ones)

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review

Samuel, have you just connected the 2 non ground wires from the steering wheel control together or do you have a resistor in one leg. The reason I ask is that the up & down buttons have the same value resistance from memory just on 2 different wires....

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review

They are connected together with no resistor.

You are correct about the same value as when I set it up the first time, the values came up the same. When I called them she said to swap the wires around which could fix the issue. I swapped the wires around and the mode, volume and down selection button works correctly although the up selection button doesn't.

Even though 4 out of the 5 buttons work correctly the values are the same on the screen, although when I programmed it I can honestly say they were different.

Any suggestions on what type of resistor, is it a 5v resistor? And I just need one for one of the wires not both correct?

Resistors don't come by voltage as that is a measure of voltage.

Resisters come in resistance values called ohms.

The value in ohms could be from .01ohms right up to 10Mohms + (10,000,000).

The formula for all this is:

Resistance = Volts/Current

Ie if you have 12 volts supply and a resistor is 100ohms then a current of 12/100=.12amps (120 milli-amps) will flow in the circuit.

Also resistors come in Wattage ratings ie if only small currents will flow (in a circuit such as steering wheel controls) then usually a 1/2 or 1/4 Watt resistor only is needed.
If you were wiring up something that would draw say 10 amps through a 10 ohm resistor with a 12 volt supply then you would need a wattage rating according to Watts = I^2 X R ie the square of current times the resistor value in ohms ie Watts = 1.2 squared X 10 = 14.4 wattage rating (you would use a 20 watt resistor as the next available higher value)

The correct resistor would need to be discovered in some circuit diagram etc.

I'll go quiet now emoticon

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review

too many numbers for me!

When I look at the ESM, both wires (Steering Switch Signal A & B circuits) are the same...

VOL UP switch ON : 634 – 665 Ω
MENU UP switch ON : 162 – 168 Ω
Phone switch ON : 0 Ω - I think this is if you have the Nissan Bluetooth kit installed)

VOL DOWN switch ON : 634 – 665 Ω
MENU DOWN switch ON : 162 – 168 Ω
SOURCE switch ON : 0 Ω

So if I understand your post correctly the calculation is 12/665 (665 being the largest ohm required) = .02 resister required?

Something like this?
