Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review
I would say not correct.
Those 3 resistance values would be the resistance of the Steering wheel switches at the 3 different positions. This is then "Read" by the DVD Unit etc to determine what the switch position is. I think most steering wheel control switches work like this.
The resistor you are talking about I know nothing about and my post above is just a quick primer on what ohms, volts and amps are about and how they are related.
Just guessing here, but I wouldn't think any resistor is needed in one of the connector wires except maybe to try and adjust the switch values to better match what he DVD unit is expecting.
eg if the DVD expects 680, 200, 50 ohms (ie say 50 ohms more than the switch positions in each case) just add a 50 ohm resistor to the pickup wire.
If it expects LESS than the 3 values then there is nothing that can be done.
In reading some of the previous posts, it seems that the DVD unit is "Programmable" ie no matter what the resistance values output by the switches, the DVD unit is "Programmed" by you the operator to read whatever value is output and do the programmed action.
Why not all values work is a puzzle (unless perhaps the Zero Ohms position is seen as NO position) - try adding a 47 ohm resistor to each pickup wire (thereby making the zero ohms a value of 47 and the other positions +47ohms), reprogram the DVD and see if that works.
( I say 47ohms because that is a value of resistor obtainable - they come in values not what you would expect eg if you need 30ohms then the nearest available is 33ohms)
Hope this helps a little in understanding how it all works

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review
You have 2 choices wait until I'm back in November and connect Phillipa's X-Trail back up or try a 1K resistor.

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review
didnt think my logic was right!
I can wait Al, but at the same time I can't wait, im like a boy with a new toy im so close to getting them working I wanna give it a go
Had another look at the jaycar website for resistors & 3 pages came up, which one is it?

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS review
I tried the 3 different resistors suggested although I couldn't get it to work. I'll be waiting for Alan to get back from his working holiday to see if he can crack it, I hope he can.
