Tar removal???

Hey all,

Well I'm not sure if it was the total legends of Orange Council, or the RTA somewhere between here and Sydney when I went down over the weekend, but I have copped a massive lump of tar, smack-bang on my rear door - on the paint work and decal that I've got there emoticon

By tar-splatter standards, it's a big-un and the bug/tar remover I've got was useless (it is on bugs so there were no illusions about its effect on tar).

Anyway, does anyone have any other tips for how I might remove it without damaging the paint or decal?

Thanks..

Re: Tar removal???

Hi Kristy,

I have a sponge which has a mesh covering that I use to get bugs and tar off the paintwork. It still needs considerable elbow grease, but works alot better than a regular sponge. I think I got it from SupaCheap years ago, and I think it came bundled as a freebie when I bought a bottle of car wash.

You might also want to try the soda-bicarb method described in this thread

Cheers Rich, will give it a go after work tomorrow. I think I know which sponges you're talking about too so might see if S'Cheap has them still. Will let you know how I go. emoticon

Hi Kristy
Sorry to here about your mess i was a car detailor a long time ago and if you want to
get tar of your car with no paint damage simply use Kerosene! on a rag once the tar is
all gone just wash your car with car wash and that it.
      Cheer,s emoticon

Cheers Ray emoticon I'll try that too (I'm sure we've got some kero in the garage). Will report back on this also after work today.

My Uncle always swore by Pine-O-Clean to get tar off his old Kombi. I've not tried it.

Re: Tar removal???

Hi Kristy.
I have used kero before, I soaked a rag in it, held it to the tar, it nearly dissolved it.
Then gently wipe it off, repeat with the kero if needed.
Then just wash car,
Im lazy so I just used wash & wax. emoticon

Wow.....ok here's what I'm going to do....

I will try all methods listed here and report back on which ones work and how well (Julie - we'll see if your Uncle was on the money..).

Lucky (?!) for me the tar blob is big enough to try each on a small patch of it emoticon

Re: Tar removal???

Righto the verdict is in:

Kero is the winner...by a long shot! (I never doubted you Ray & John emoticon )

The turps also worked, not quite as well as the kero.

The Pine-o-clean didn't work that well for me. It got some of the small, non-blobby splatters off with a fair bit of elbow grease.

Bicarb & soda.......forget it (even with a bug sponge- which I had buried in the garage, and a bugger-load of elbow grease).

 emoticon
