Re: T31 Rattle Source

That's interesting - I've an intermittent rattle in that area.

Had another victory over the weekend.

As you can read above I've fixed most of the annoying rattles - but everytime I go over a reasonable bump the front end seemed to "crash" as if lots of panels where loose or something. Seemed like it was coming from the front bumper area, and as I had installed some steel mesh behind the grill I thought it probably was that. there was also a very similar quallity noise when a gust of wind hit the front.

On closer investigation (by thumping everything in site) I found there was a buzzing/rattle coming from, of all things, the front number plate.

It is held in by 2 screws at the top and the mid area was Juuuuussst touching the panel behind and would "Buzz" at the slightest bump (or gust of wind).

Two pieces of good quality double sided tape firmly attached the number plate to the bumper to assist the screws - and VOILA - no more crashing, buzzing noises over bumps or in winds.

Bizarre cause for noises that sound nothing like where they actually originate.

Re: T31 Rattle Source

In spite of the above "Victories" in ridding my X-Trail of rattles there were still some small annoying buzzes/rattles/thumps coming from the front region.

I can't believe how noisy my car is compared to other cars I have owned - the X-Trail seems to be a very lightly constructed car in some areas; it seems very sensitive to very small panel/cable/fittings misalignments etc.

The latest rattle fixes (it's getting VERY quiet now) where all in the Bonnet (Engine hood).

First item receiving attention was the bonnet support rod. Silicone sealant under the two mounts helped, but it still rattled at times. Fixed that by removing the rod, slipping on a tight, thick rubber washer that pressed it firm against the hinge end fitting.

The second and hardest to find was actually several areas of the under bonnet insulation panel. By tapping the bonnet I found 6 areas that "Buzzed" with any vibration of the hood. More silicone under the edges of the insulation panel where necessary and the whole bonnet is very quiet now.

Finally driving a car that feels and sounds solid. emoticon

Re:

Went for a weekend to Little Desert in Vic a couple of weeks ago. Crawling through the sandy tracks was non-eventful and showed how good this 4wd is (apart from ground clearance - plus 1 to 2 inches would be very handy).

As I drove over a rather deep "Hole" there was a loud metallic "clunk" that sounded like another Rattle !!!!

Also some noises I thought I had fixed were still there; but took more of a rough road to manifest.

Hmmmmm!!!!

Today I was "fiddling" and banging front panels again to see what I could find. I noticed when I Lifted the front left corner of the bonnet it moved up and down about 3mm and there was "That" mechanical klunk. Couldn't see the problem so I removed the upper grill and saw the bonnet catch with the 3mm "play" and that was the klunk/rattle source.

Basically the bonnet adjustment rubbers were allowing the bonnet to be too low and therefore not tight in the catch.

Rotated the two rubber bump stops at the front of the bonnet (one each side and have spiral attachments to allow adjustment) to Juuuust allow the bonnet to close and NO MORE RATTLE at all.

Basically the bonnet closing was way out of adjustment.

Also a 1" X 2" peice of computer mouse mat doubled and jammed between the windscreen and the roof trim just to the left of the front map lights has cured the annoying "Buzzing" that occasionally appeared in the roof trim.

Car is quieter again !!!!!!!

Will this ever end????

Re:

My T30 had a very annoying rustling rattle at the beginning of one of my trips. Tried everything, and after about 1/2 hour on the side of the road I accidentally discovered it was two of the three things dangling off the rear vision mirror! One of them had to go.

PS never did figure out what that high pitched whine was a few years back, obviously nothing disastrous as I've done 80,000km since then.

Re: T31 Rattle Source

I hope my rattle is fixed as easy as freewill11's was??

My New September 2011 build X-Trail TI, just reached 5,6000 klms has developed a very annoying tap, tap, tap, type rattleing noise which seems to be coming from the left hand side rear passanger door? I have compleatly removed EVERYTHING from the rear of the car. Even checked under the rear (leather), seats, did up the seat belts so there would be nothing swinging or tapping another thing? Padded and weighted down every section of the boot area including the jack and wheel brace, stuffed towles and small sheets into the lower rear drawer, I have driven the vehicle with the rear windows up, down, half way up, shut tight?? nothing seems to work. No noise when traveling on a smooth piece of road but as soon as I hit some rough road or even rough pot holed tar streches back it comes, tap, tap, tap, taptaptap, tap its driving me crazy?? My old 2004 model never had one rattle in 166,000 klms and still not rattles.

If I cannot find this I will have to let Nissan have a go at the 10,000klm service. Cheers.

Ironbark, try checking the triangular plastic trim on the bottom corner of the rear windows. I had a similar tapping and found one of the clips was missing. It's a terrible spot anyway because the plastic cover sits directly on the metal frame of the door.
