Re:

Thanks Kev! Its good reading and now that i know for sure that my warranty isnt worth a picnh off sh1t I should've attacked this job myself..
My issue now is Nissan are now telling me that my EGR needs to be replaced coz its knackered!
When 2 weeks prior to today.. i handed them the better part of 1/2 a tonne to clean the suckered thing ....

Now it's going to be ANOTHER 1100$ to replace the EGR... awesome huh.

So my short n sweet solution... blanking plate and black tape over the MIL on the dash LOL

Re: Error code P0488

About 3 weeks ago I suffered the same code. Mine is a 2013 T31 Diesel. After following a step by step procedure in another thread I was able to remove and clean it. Spend the time to get it spotless including opening the valve with your finger and cleaning the seat area. I also cleaned the crinkly inlet tube to remove the chance of this gunk dislodging and re entering my combustion chamber. Once spotlessly clean I made the blanking plate and installed it. Three weeks and 3 tanks of juice later and the light has not come back on. I cleaned the pressure sensor with MAF cleaner which is one of the 3 modules attached to the EGR. I believe my light came on due to the fact the EGR couldn't move at all and was stuck tight due to the incredible amount of soot and tar build up. The EGR valve motor will send a code if it is unable to move. They do have a position sensor. Is it possible that although you managed to clean your EGR the motor operating the valve had ceased? I cannot see any other reason for the MIL re triggering.

Re: Error code P0488

I have been cleaning my EGR for years now and I'm absolutely fed up with it. I clean it, it's good for a year then I clean it again, it's good for another year and so on...

I had a service done at "step up" on the gold coast today (they are legends). I spoke to a mechanic there named Nick who was super helpful. He said that basically people are just blanking their EGR valves now because that's the only real long term solution if it's a reoccurring issue.

So I have ordered one from "EGR blanks Australia" (see link)

 https://egrblanks.com.au/shop?olsPage=products%2Fnissan-navara-d40-euro-5-yd25-25ltr

This cost me $6

Now I'm gonna put this sucka in when it arrives and ill post to let you all know how it goes.

If anyone has some wisdom to impart before I do so please let me know.

Re: Error code P0488

So I installed the blanking plate about a week ago and cleaned the EGR valve. The unit is still throwing P0488 codes, so I wonder whether there is a flow sensor or not. The codes are intermittent going and coming on again.

The install was painful I would recommend getting a 2mm plate versus a 3 mm plate because it moves the whole unit sideways, making bolts challenging to get back in as they don't line up nice and square. I imagine a thinner plate would help with this.

Hope this helps anyone who is thinking about doing the same.

Re: Error code P0488

The code seems to indicate that the PCM is trying to determine the position of the EGR valve based on its command signal, so if you have the valve disconnected then it will never get a return signal.

Try having the EGR valve connected to the wiring but not installed and see if that removes the code. I'm not sure if having an EGR valve connected like this is OK and hopefully one of the more knowledgable diesel members will come along and confirm.

Re: Rev Kev

Thanks for your input Kev,

Do you mean just leave the whole unit out?

I have an entirely new problem now where the exhaust gas is forcing its way out where the hose connects to the EGR unit, spraying it all over the place in the engine bay. My god, I smelt something which led my to investigate.

this EGR thing is hopeless

Re: Error code P0488

I would have thought you needed to plug or close off the tube from the exhaust somehow too.

Yes, I'm suggesting leaving the EGR valve connected to the wiring harness so electrical signals are still sent and received that way "fooling" the ecu into thinking the valve is still installed.
Go googling a few diesel forums. I'm sure there are plenty of discussions on EGR deletions.
