Error code P0488

I have a 2008 Nissan X-Trail 2.0D 173 (T31) which currently has 31k miles on the clock. I made the huge mistake last week and let the wife borrow the car for a few days emoticon only to have it returned with the MIL on the dashboard lit up emoticon

I connected my code reader to the socket and it happily informed me that the error code was P0488 - Exhaust gas recirculation Throttle control circuit A Range/Performance.

In the first instance I cleared the error and drove a further 50 miles and before it reappeared emoticon

Could anyone recommend how to troubleshoot/repair this fault, I know the code is to point you in the general direction but has anyone else had the same issue?

Thanks for such a fantastic forum emoticon

Re: Error code P0488

You may need to take the car for a good long drive on a motorway at a highish speed. it may be related to the DPF regeneration a lot of Australian diesel owners are experienceing.
Have a read through the T31 diesel section under DPF regeneration and MIL light.

Re: Error code P0488

Steve,

According to the T31 diesel error codes found HERE P0488 related to a clogged EGR valve.

This is not good news indeed, as you maybe experiencing an oil leak that is clogging the EGR valve as described HERE

Please check your air filter and if you notice any traces of engine oil on it, take it immediately to the dealer to trouble-shoot as they might need to replace the oil separator.

P.S. This has nothing to do with your wife's driving style emoticon

Jalalski,

First of all can I say thank you for answering my post, I've been viewing this forum for sometime and you seem to reply to almost every post emoticon

Thanks for the pointer, I can say that since posting the MIL light has now cleared itself but I will certainly check the air filter for traces of oil.

Will keep you posted.

P.s. Please could I blame this on the wife as I hate to part with the X-Trail even for 2 days a week emoticon

Re: Error code P0488

Spot on!!

I checked the air filter and as you predicted there are oil traces all over it, I guess I'll be booking this in at a local Nissan dealership in the morning.

Do you know if this is covered under the standard 3 year, 60k miles warranty?

Again, thanks for such a fantastic "Service".

I'll keep the posting updated.

Hi Steve,

It must be covered by warranty. It's a Nissan defect.

Re: Error code P0488

Many thanks for a great forum with helpful and relevant information from X-Trail owners.

My Exxy is Aug 2008 dCI. Now done just under 18000km.

Same problem - Error Code PO488.

Yesterday the mechanic at Nissan removed EGR valve and cleaned it. He said it was easy to access one side of the valve but not the other, due to the length of the tube on that side. He said it took him an hour and a half just to remove the valve for cleaning.

MIL came on again today after only 10 kms.

Will be taking it back (for third time) on Monday and will mention the oil leak possibility.
Also will get some feedback on the use of the Wynns EGR3 aerosol.

Will keep you posted of any helpful info.

Once again, thanks for the opportunity to learn from other X-Trail users.

Regards
Adrian

Had the MIL pop up on me 2 weeks ago.. 2010 T31, 103ks.. EGR was caked!
I have dealer (not nissan) warranty, which of course was declined, reasoning, it is a maintenance issue BUH BOW!
Nissan cleaned the EGR, done an ECU update at an exceptional cost, all done and dusted, right?

Nope...

Same fault has just popped back up! Could this possibly be a residual thing from it being gunked with crud before or a failed EGR (pending inspection)?

I fit up the provent 200 at another exorbitant cost ($231 with all hoses clamps and drain cock ... adding some sheet aluminium for the bracket) to help eliminate this EGR issue again.

I am going to fit a blanking plate to the EGR after this... like i have done to previous vehicles (Tdi Disco and ZD30 Patrol) but have heard the Exxy ecu needs a flash tune to ignore the EGR sensor? Can anyone shed some light on that for me please?
