Audio Install T30 Series II. (With under seat sub)

Well after almost 18 months of listening to the (sub-) standard T30 stereo, I finally found the time to install a higher quality system in our X-Trail. Although this was done on a reasonably limited budget, the difference is night and day in terms of sound quality and functionality.

Now firstly, I am not nor do I claim to be a qualified or professional car audio installer. I installed all of the audio gear myself a few weeks ago and I thought that I would share a few of my photos to give you some ideas if you are thinking about upgrading the standard Nissan stereo.

Since the X-Trail belongs to ‘The Minister for War and Finance’ I was given one firm guideline in relation to the install. There was to be absolutely no reduction of the rear load space whatsoever. So I decided to mount the subwoofer under the driver’s seat.

Due the limited amount of space available I decided to use an 8” Infinity Reference Sub in a sealed enclosure constructed out of 18mm MDF. Now the box may not look like the prettiest one around but remember it is under the seat and so it can’t really be seen.

I then decided to mount a 4-channel Amp under the front passenger’s seat. I ended up using a Jaycar Amp rated at 4 x130wrms with the front channels powering a set of Morel Tempo 6 splits and the two rear channels bridged to power the sub. I used a combination of 2g and 4g wire for the power and earths.

Since our X-Trail is the ST model, it did not come with the factory tweeters. So a new set of splits were in order. I am using a set of Morel Tempo 6 components in the front and the standard Nissan in the rear. I also used Dynamat on the front doors and sealed up as best I could the large access holes in the doors.

To mount the speakers I used two 16mm MDF spacers that I then bolted (not screwed) to the door frame. I also used some closed-cell foam on both faces of the spacers before the speakers were installed to the doors.

For the tweeters I decided to flush mount them to the cloth grills that would normally cover the factory tweeters.

I hope this helps anyone who may be thinking of an audio upgrade for their X-Trail.

Cheers
Mick

Nice work there mate, looks like you have all the components for a decent mid-range set up for the Exy. emoticon
How does it sound?
Actually, probably the most important thing is...."is the ‘The Minister for War and Finance’ " happy emoticon

I think your taking away a fair bit of credit on your part Mick, thats a top job, very professional, (not too sure about the tape holding the tweeter, but as long as it does the job).

I doubt that you would have got a better job from the pros, and in the process saved you money as well.

Top stuff. emoticon emoticon

Yeah that photo looks a bit deceiving. The tweeter is mounted and secured by a metal clamp that attaches to the underside of the tweeter. The tape is actually some Dynamat that I used to reinforce the plastic trim around the tweeter to add some strength after I trimmed the plastic grill.

Cheers
