No problems Scot, noted.
I don't have the finalized pricing as yet, but I can tell you that it will be cheaper than the front bash plate.
Andrew: I am also not sure if you gonna have enough room about that pipe section going to the right hand side muffler to fit the rear bash plate, so I guess we gonna have to test that when they come in.

Just looking at this picture puts doubts in my mind of how strong this plate will be.
The plate itself looks OK, but the way its mounted to the diff has got me worried.
If at all some rock hits the plate, it could do more damage to the diff by ripping the cast sections it is bolted too right off.
Here is the formal response from the manufacturer in relation to the above concern:
quote:
Since more than 10 years by more than 20 other vehicles the rear differential skid plate is fitted on the bolts from the differential and we heared never of a problem.
Had we found a better fitting position, we would have used it. The design engineers tested this skid plates on other 4 wheel drives in extreme off-road conditions and found these mounting points to be very adequate.
We are the world largest market for skid plates, our engineering design team know what they do.
We manufacture skid plates in Europe for nearly all automobile manufacturers
like Ford, Opel, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru an so on .
Monthly production over 70.000 pieces.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper and Diff Bash Plates
All good and well Jalal, but they never mentioned testing on the X Trail with this particular plate and mounting point in place.
Other 4wd's, especially if tested in extreme offroad situations, will have a live axle anyway. The plate would not mount in the same way, instead be mounted to the steel axle housing or directly to the diff cover plate bolts.
I have no doubt in my mind that the plate can handle it, it looks very solid. Its just how they used the lengths of tube to reach the mounting points to secure it to the diff. It will act as a lever / fulcrem if something hits from the front and it will rip the sides of the diff off. You don't need to be an engineer to know that.
Those 2 black plugs I can see are only there to stop vibration.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper and Diff Bash Plates
Their statement that it has been tested with other 4WDs means that it was tested with real 4WDs in a much tougher off-road condition than the xtrail would ever find itself in and knowing too well how the Europeans like to tackle off-road obstacles after seeing the Russians off-road, I am very confident that it would never pose any threat or risk to the casing of the rear diff. The x-trail was also tested just like they do with every skid plate they design and develop. The tube length washers are there to strengthen the entire structure and it will not rip anything off.
If you have better suggestions, you're welcome to share them with us. The design and development of these skid plates took over a year to make it into production, so I don't think the decision to use these mounting points came lightly.
Given the relatively small area and surface this bash plate covers, the 2 rubber plugs are more than enough to stop any vibration, considering a much wider front bash plate used 2 rubber points for vibration as well.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper and Diff Bash Plates
The reality is if you've hit something hard enough to damage the plate and its mounting you've gone somewhere that has outstripped your capabilities and that of your vehicle. If you didn't have the plate fitted you'll probably be doing similar if not more damage that if the plate was fitted.
Bash plates are there to let you get out of the $hit you got yourself into, not to get you further into trouble.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper and Diff Bash Plates
While we had Lachlan's T31 exy up on the hoist at Hi-Tech this morning, I had a look at the rear diff and to my surprise the 2 mounting points in question and which Tony raised a concern about and the ones where these long bolts are going through, are NOT mounting points of the rear diff at all and are completely empty and not being used for anything.
Based on the above, the decision by the manufacturer to use these 2 empty holes in the body of the rear diff is now 100% justified and correct.
I initially thought the bolts going through the rear diff belonged to the diff and were part of its structure, but it is not the case at all and these bolts with the long spacers are part of the diff protection plate.
In actual case, these 2 empty holes looked like specific mounting points for some sort of protection which Nissan either didn't include with the Australia T31 or never went a head and produced a protection plate for. They're just there doing nothing at all.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper and Diff Bash Plates
Hi Jalal
While it was up on the hoist what did you think about clearances for the dual exhaust system and the rear bumper protection. Should be ok?

Re: T31 Rear Bumper and Diff Bash Plates
Hi John,
I wouldn't know until we fit the actual Hi-Tech system on Lachlan's T31 as it was only a visual inspection to see if further modification was required to the existing T31 diesel system, we didn't bolt anything on. I will keep it in mind when we start designing the exhaust system for the T31 petrol.
