Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Mac01 emoticon

I have submitted this before but lost the pic?

I sited your pictures of the catch can where it shows the tube between the air intake from the
air cleaner to I presume the oil separator?, so which of these connections is the in and out,
also from the catch can which is the in and out, thus from what position on the catch can to that tube connection in/out,
as I have a similar catch can but has no instructions?

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

I have just bought from a dealer a 2008 T31 TL auto 2.0L diesel, 133,000km.

After picking it up and taken a closer look at home, I realised that there was oil on the air filter as well as quite a bit at the bottom of the air filter housing. I cleaned it up and started monitoring it for driving over 500km or so. There is still a little bit of oil blowing back into the air filter housing but not visually staining the air filter itself.

When I brought the car to the dealer's mechanic, the latter said he tried to switch to a different Turbocharger Booster Control Solenoid Valve but that did not work and so he put back the old one. He then told me not to worry about and that it was an acceptable engine oil blow-back or blow-by.

I am not sure about his diagnosis as he did not give more details when I asked.

Does anyone know a more knowledgeable mechanic on this issue in the Brisbane area whom I can seek another opinion? Better still, if there are some more knowledgeable mechanics on this forum please help me with this.

I have read that some of the members here have gone with installing the oil catch-can, Provent 200, etc. If that is going to solve the issue, then I will also do that but wondering if I need to open things up to check for accumulated soot/particles that have clogged up somewhere?

Any input would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks.

Cheers
Dan

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Hi Dan,

Yes definitely install the Provent.
The M9R engine has issues with the oil separator in the top of the engine not being able to handle internal pressures very well as detailed on page 1 of this thread.

It would also be advisable to check the intercooler for accumulated oil and clean it out, as well as cleaning the EGR valve of any accumulated soot deposits.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Hi Kev

Thanks for your reply.

Do you think it is necessary to look also at and clean out the following:

1. Intake manifold
2. Turbo charger

I've not tackled taking these apart before, do I need special tools other than the usual bolts and nuts concerned? Any resealing, gaskets replacement, etc.?

With regards to the catch can, I've seen the Provent 200 selling between Au$170 and Au$315. Also, there is the copy versions from China selling for under $50 with the stainless steel filter.

Do you know if the Chinese made ones would be suitable to do the job? If not, where would you recommend getting the German original one from?

Cheers

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Not having a diesel myself Dan, I can only comment based on what other members have said in forum posts, so I suggest you read through the whole thread and search for provent to see if there are any other posts mentioning it and maybe where they bought it from.

Personally I would not want to trust a chinese copy when buying something to protect an expensive engine so go with the true provent that others here know works.

Hopefully someone with a diesel who might have fitted a provent will come along and let you know what else they cleaned.

Hi Kev

Thanks. Hopefully, yes emoticon

I'll wait for a few days and then I'll perhaps create a new post just on Provent and asking for feedbacks from those who have installed them over different length of time.

Feedback Sought from Provent 200 or other Oil Catch-can Users

Hi

I notice that this X-trail forum isn't very busy as years before. Are X-trail owners losing interest in this forum? It would be a shame to not get fresh input from all owners, new and old as we do have a large pool of X-trail owners.

I hope to hear from owners of T31 and/or others who have installed Provent 200 or other oil catch-cans how their cars are doing since installation. It would be good to hear from those who have been able to monitor their performance and subsequent issues if any.

I have looked at the Provent 200, and apparently there are other manufacturers copying the German design and selling for a fraction of the price.

Those selling "genuine" Provent 200 (version IV from 2020) are asking from Au$170 without the hose kit or including a universal hose kit from Au$315.

Non-genuine Provent 200 copies are asking from Au$35 for the catch-can or from Au$100 including the hose kit.

Please share your experience if you have installed the Provent 200 copy catch-can as well.

Thank you.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

I’ve been following this thread with great interest for a while now because my recently purchased 2013 turbo diesel X trail had quite a lot of oil on the air filter, 5000ks after a service. I learned to gun the motor now and again while accelerating and it helped reduce the oil contamination when I changed the oil and fitted a new air filter. Further reading found me researching catch cans. I’ve now purchased a Provent 200 lV and intend fitting it soon. Let’s see how it goes.

If you've already had oil on your air filter, don't forget to check the intercooler for oil and clean it out, along with giving the EGR valve a clean also. You'll find posts on how to do that if you search the forum.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Well, I’ve fitted the Provent 200 lV ($170) and the hoses arrived from Western filters ($50+15pp) yesterday so it’s all fitted with minimal drama. So now I’m going to do an oil & filter change and see how we go.

Photos will show the set up but I’m not sure how to upload them, will try to find out.

I’ve checked the Flic-r photo upload stuff and quite honestly I’m not interested in going through all that grief just to post one photo. If anyone would like to see my Provent (brackets) setup, I can even send you the templates I made. Contact me.
