Re:

Please keep the provent

i let the dealer take my off, because of "warranty issues" .. 1000 kms later, and at the worst possible time, in the middle of the highway in regional victoria the car lost all power and cut out... no mobile phone reception, nothing.. revs suddenly dropped to zero, and check engine light came on. i believe this was because oil got onto the MAP sensors or some air measuring sensor, as my air filter was pretty much soaked in oil.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Just drained the oil from my provent for the first time. The oil in the drain hose went from approx 1cm to about 30cm over the course of some intense 4wding on Saturday. Obviously working the engine harder means more oil gets spat out/through. I reckon I have collected about 30-50mL. This is a 420mL jar.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

I'm not here to convince people to install or remove provents, but I just wanted to add something positive to this whole thread. I bought my 2008 diesel 8 months ago with 60000km on the clock, and have now done 7000kms since, with no problems at all.

When I bought it there was some oil staining on the filter, and some (maybe 10 to 20) what I can only describe as "flecks" of oily material - probably a carbon / oil scale sort of thing each only 1 mm or so big. I replaced the air filter about 2000km ago, and have since got some barely noticeable oil staining, and a few flecks of this scaley material. I do a lot of towing (probably about 2000kms of the 7), typically a trailer with canopy loaded up to around 1000kg's, plus a family of 5.

I considered installing the provent intitially, but procrastinated and ended up deciding I would try it for a while first (I have a warrantee on the vehicle with a cap of $2k, which I am reasonably confident will include any oil induced issues - although one can never be sure). Perhaps I have my head in the sand and it's only a matter or time until I get a MIL light or a clogged MAF sensor. However there is very little feedback from longer term owners that have had a positive experience with the vehicle far, so I thought I'd add my 5 cents worth. Someone will probably come back and say "install a provent - what have you got to lose?"

Re:

Am also interested in finding out from diesel owners if the oil stain on the air filter happen when the car is driven on higher RPMs for prolonged period of time, like it is the case with Todd who collecting 30-50ml of oil when his exy was under load? Does this happen for someone driving the car normally in lower RPMs as well?

Re:

^^

flooded my air filter with oil doing 2200rpms cruising at 110km/h for pretty much 2 weeks straight and clocking 3000 kms in that time. perhaps i should try doing it in 5th for 3000 rpms? because of the load on engine the fuel consumption difference is almost negligable..

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

The air filter on my exy was just changed about 2 weeks ago for the 20000km service, I haven't done any long distance driving since but there's already little specks of oil traces on the air filter. I did go above 2000rpm a couple of times and it's short distance driving around town with trips lasting around 2 to 5 mins long. Most times it's 2 mins travel each from home to work, work to shops, shops to home.

I went 4wding on Sunday but it didn't add any or barely noticeable oil on the air filter. I did a pre-trip check in the morning and then today. Sunday driving involved a bit of hill climbs and descents (love, love, love the hill descent control!) in first gear, dirt road driving up to 60km/hr up in 4th gear. RPM were mainly under 2500.

Old air filter taken on 17/7/12 after 18000kms done

Since the service. Taken today. Done almost 19000km now.

I'll be doing a 1300km trip this weekend at 110km/hr to Perth, around Perth and back to Kalgoorlie so will check. About 16000km of the 19000km done so far has been Perth-Kal return trip.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

As a new Xtrail TD owner with only 3300klms on the clock, after reading this post, I went out and looked at the air filter and noticed a few spots of oil, not much I would have thought, but some.

Now we did have it semi off road yeasterday for a little and under some load and noticed no signs of oil staining air filter any further.

Is this problem isolated to some TD vehicles or all as this has me rethinking my purchase already.

Or am I just overthinking the problem?

And besides the air filter, are there any other signs to look out for?

EDIT: To add to my prev post, just had out front and took air cleaner vents off and noticed oil sitting in the ridges of the tubing going to the turbo and around 20ml built up in front of the turbo itself?

Are these the starts of this problem?

Re:

According to Nissan it is not a problem.
A lot of diesel Xy owners used to have diesels before and have never come across this in past vehicles.

It seems to be related to the Euro 4 & 5 model engines.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

hi friends!
i was very upset this evening...
well, what we have... 2.0dci 2008 6AT
previous problem - CC gases put oil vapor to airflow senser, it stoped work correct and turbine didnt turn on while i didnt wash sensor...
- i bought chinas oil catch tank and installed it, it had low diameter tubes. after 1km way i checked my X and found oil on the ground under engine. chinese device was uninstalled. problems with sensor still with me.
- i bought provent 200 and installed it. 500km no problems with sensor. there is no oil inside provent, but its inside filter is oily.
yesterday i visited service to change stabilizer bushes and i've seen that there were oily agregates...
service man told that it was leaking rear seal oil cranks... (to change that i need a lot of money...)
- this morning i went to my villagehouse 40km from city, checked under my car in evening was oil 1cm dia. i drived back to city. and when i was parking i felt smell of hot engine oil inside my X. turbotimer was working for 1min. when i went from my car i saw a lot of oil trails on parking. i took a look under my X and there was 10cm dia oil... what should i do???
cases:
1) uninstal provent - there was no leakage if no oilcatchers
2) change rear seal oil crank (should i change front to if this hard work is going tobe?) im not sure leakage will desappeare
3) check CC valve on the top of engine
4) move provent closer to CC valve (origin tube is 15-20cm long) tubes to provent are 1.25+1.25m long
5) what else?????

PLEASE HEEELP!!!
