Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Exy warrior, my advice would be to fit the catch can and just take it off for dealer servicing that's what I was gonna do with my Diesel Xtrail.
From what I have read from this thread is that if you don't and the oil is in your system then you may be in a world of pain with oil in you MAF sensor and every other sensor becoming inundated with oil and setting off warning lights.
Plus your car may have to run-exhaust regens more often as the extra oil is ingested and then burnt off putting your exhaust and engine under undue strain.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

I don't need to do anything at all at this stage as my engine is not showing any of the symptoms described in this forum thread yet.
I am merely interested in the thread because it sound rather serious if it happens.
My car has just clicked over 1000kms and still no trace of any oil on the air filter and no oil in the air intake on visual inspection.

Re:

Although my M9R engine is still showing none of the symptoms described in this thread and on the facebook picture, I had a chat with the Service manager when I took her in for the 1000k service today.
Funnily, he has never seen or heard of the problem before and he has serviced plenty of diesel Exys.
I am starting to wonder if this condition is a result of the car being driven in a particular fashion or on particular slope/terrain etc.
I agree the condition is hardly good and far from normal but given it isn't endemic to all the M9R fitted Exys (see Steven F's entry a few posts back) one has to wonder if there is a common condition that has occurred that started the problem.
I would be keen to establish a common condition that may have started the oil leak problems even if only so I can perhaps avoid it!

Post script: Those with the problem might check out this thread in the UK Xtrail forum:
http://www.x-trail-uk.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1582&start=0&sid=977c370c938a99b0b963cb53616dacd8

Here one guy describes a problem with a split pipe from the air filter to the turbo intake. Has this possible cause been considered before?

Hi Mark,

As you can see from the UK thread, Kev (our forum member) was on the case and he has reported it back to us on THIS page of this existing thread.

The interesting bit about that post is Nissan's UK willingness to replace the Oil Separator and more than once. This is something that Nissan Australia haven't done to date!

Thanks jalalski - I guess it was worth a try.
I just find it intriguing that it happens to some Diesel owners and not to others.

Re:

yeh my dealer said the same thing to me, never heard of the problem etc... its echoed with nissan australia when i talked to them. i still haven't spoken to the person in charge of this problem but i have a feeling the individual doesn't work there anymore.

at this stage i'm just coping this. i have modified my provent to be more easily servicable (extending the drain pipe to the bottom, and changed the supplied hoses to oil proof hoses). i have also found the provent is more effective if you reverse the hoses (top bottom) but this is just me. i am trapping a lot of oil now regardless of how i drive (slow, fast, highway, suburban etc). strangely enough if i keep the boost pressures up, higher fuel consumption but less oil gets trapped in. not conclusive though.

Is it difficult/costly to replace the oil separator?

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

update on this issue

my dealer's service dept told me that the oil level should sit below the top line of the dip stick. it should sit below the 2 dots from top line. having it full to the top line will cause oil to come back to the air filter. was also told that the head retains some oil so the best time to read oil level is dead cold in the morning or at least 15 minutes after the car's been running.

anyone call bull??

also i'm having no luck with the missing oil. 1.5 liters in a 600km trip can't be acceptable??

Re:

Interesting info regarding the suggested oil level - will check mine tomorrow before starting. I'll also make sure my dealer is aware of this at the next scheduled oil change.

Checked my air filter yesterday with 2000km on the clock and nil oil showing on the filter or in the intake at all. I haven't seen one DPF light either - that might be something to do with the car regularly getting above 70-80 kmh almost every time we go out. I'm very much enjoying the torque of the diesel!

Incidentally, I noted on Wikipedia for the M9R engine that only the Xtrail manual and the Diesel version of the Renault Laguna use the 127kW version. The Auto Exy and all the other French cars fitted with the M9R are fitted with a de-rated 110kW version. I am wondering if there is anything in that (in terms of this oil leak problem)?

Re:

Just had a 20000 service at Nissan at Five dock , when i got the car back home i notoiced the oil metre was a block down (roughly 1 litre of oil) so checked the dipstick and it was 2 and a half notches down , so took it back and they told me they dont fill it to spec as u will get oil in the air box, i said so u have a fault with this model then? he said no, i said i have 4 diesel's and none of them have oil in the airbox, he scrathes his head and repeated the Nissan story, before that they said its normal to have oil in the airbox.
I am i missing something here??? When i go back and there is still oil in the airbox i will have a small document for him to sign stating its a normal happening for the dci 2 ltr if he dosnt sign i will get onto the
manager, then whoever, if he stalls .
