Not knowing a lot about diesels, could you explain this in more detail please as I am interested in finding out more.

Just let me add to my previous post about my runaway Golf, it also had a lot of oil on the air filter before the fix mentioned.

MIL on T31 Diesel

posted by Trainman78 - Moved from another thread
================

Hello

I finally bought myself a TS Dci X Trail, and have been enjoying it. But I have now recently had some problems.
It now has 15,800 kms on it, and about 3-4 weeks ago, the MIL light came on. I rang the dealer and asked them what should I do. They advised me to bring it in so that they can put it on the computer to check the codes. The code that came up is P0488. I was advised that they`d need to have the car for 2 days for them to fix. So I booked it in.

The 2 days was last Mon and Tues. At the end of Tues, I received a call from the dealership and told that my car was ready for pickup. He then informed me that because I had the car serviced at a seperate non nissan mechanic (he was a fully licensed, MTA mechanic to maintain warranty) I had to pay a "diagnostic fee". I told him no way, it`s a warranty issue and that I am not paying a cent. He then told me that his mechanics had found that the oil on the dipstick was 6mm over the max mark and that Nissan are refusing the warranty because of this. Their reasoning being that overfilling the oil had caused oil to spray on to the EGR valve and air filter, and that this was not a fault, just clumsy servicing.

I called in to the Dept Fair Trading on the way down to the dealership, and they advised me to either sort it out with the Dealer or submit an application to the Tribunal. So I argued down at the dealship for about an hour or so, and in the end just paid the $110 to get the car back and I`ll fight later to recoup this money. I was advised to change my air filter ASAP as oil had contaminated it, so I replaced this the very next day (Wed). The engine oil had been reduced, all the insides of the air intake cleaned out and the MIL had been reset too.

Anyhow, I sought many opinions on the situation, and even contacted Ray Hadley on 2GB because no one agreed that it made sense that the oil "apparently" only being 6mm will cause problems like this and that Nissan should have in fact covered this under warranty. Everyone including the Dept Fair Trading agreed that it sounded like they are trying to find any loophole to not honour the warranty. But I finally decided that $110 is not really worth getting too stressed over.

Until Friday afternoon at 3pm. The MIL returned. I contacted the dealership, and I was assured that they`d get someone on to it right away to check the light if I turned up. They put it on the computer, and yes oh yes, P0488 again. That`s right, it has nothing to do with the oil level as they have now corrected this and cleaned things out. I also checked the new air filter, and there are now noticeable tiny little specks of oil on it again. So it is now booked in again next Thursday to be fixed. The service manager seemed much more reasonable this time, and now accepted that we have a bigger problem, and that in fact they may well could have been wrong in their first diagnosis. I played it cool with him and I hope that we can find out what the problem is on Thursday.

I will keep you all updated on how things go. I did notice that there were other threads on here with the same problem, but none of them have been updated with how they got on and whether the fault was fixed or not. It`d be great if we could find that out too please.

Dave,

The first I would do is demand an immediate refund of the $110.00 you paid because this error code has NOTHING to do with the oil level and it has everything to do with a faulty oil separator which Nissan Australia knows about!

The second thing I would do is get the dealer to refer to their service bulletins advising them to keep an eye for a defect like that as it is NOT the first time they see oil sprayed on the air filter coming from the EGR valve.

It's just poor customer service to have some dealers try and blame honest independent mechanics for a known Nissan defect and try and get paid for identifying this defect at the same time!

P.S. The error code is identified in the table below

I have been advised from my mechanic to get it fixed first then we'll hit them for the refund. The service manager did say that "things can be changed" if it proves that they were wrong.

Is there a way that I can get access to the relevant service bulletins regarding this??

Also, should I name the dealer in question to warn other people?

I don't think so. Nissan will not share such information with you.

You can do so in the "dealers feedback" thread if you like under the servicing section of the forum.

Re: Strange engine noise, oil on the air filter & erratic fuel gauge. (T31 Diesel)

Hi again.

Well I`m really hoping not to have a repeat of last Tuesday afternoon on Thursday when I drop my car off to have fixed again. This time I want Nissan and/or the dealer to honour the warranty and to stop blaming my mechanic obviously.

Do you think there is someone that I could contact before I drop it off who could give this some sway or is there anything pro-active that I could do?

I haven`t reported last week`s incident to Nissan as yet. I`m wondering if they would care that one of their dealers are treating their customers this way. The dealer blamed Nissan for not honouring the warranty, I`m supposing that there could be a slight chance that I have been lied to. Perhaps Nissan should be told of what happened.

Has anyone spoken to customer service before and received satisfaction?

Thanks again

It would be a good idea to report it to Nissan head-office to check if the dealer is following the correct procedure in regard to this warranty claim.

Nissan Address & contact details
For those unhappy XTrailers who have been unfairly treated by Nissan or their Nissan Dealers. Phone 1800035053. Nissan Customer Relations Dept. State your case to a Manager.

I think I walked passed you and your Xy sitting near the front service door at Nepean Motor Group, is it a black one? You were talking to one of the "staff" and not happy by the looks of it.
I was going to say Hi but had my own dramas with them.
If you have a peek in the garage my baby is up on a hoist to the right with half of the car on the ground, getting the clutch done, not covered by warranty.
Its been there for 2 weeks now and will be there for most of a 3rd. emoticon

Hey yeah that was me. It`s a black one. Was this on Friday or Tuesday afternoon? So what`s the story with your clutch? I`m assuming you have low km`s, why wouldn`t it be covered under warranty? Or have you told this story in another part of the forum have you?
