Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror

OK Guys,

Further information which you need to be aware of before doing this mod.

There are 2 types of rear view mirror mounts on cars and these are explained HERE

The T31 X-Trail would have what is called the Wedge Mount which is glued to the windscreen, so the Gentex auto-dimming mirror would suit the T31 provided that the base of the factory mirror matches the Gentex one which you guys need to check.

For the T30 X-Trail however, we have what is called a headliner mount for the rear view mirror and this is how mine looks like when dismantled:

Image

The plastic cover pops out when you pull it down and it is not held by any screws. This will reveal the mounting base of the rear view mirror held by 3 screws

Image

Once these screws are removed, the whole mirror will be in your hands

Image Image

And this is the position of the mirror mounting screws

Image

Based on this, I don't believe the Gentex series auto-dimming mirrors will be suitable for the T30 because I couldn't find any of them selling with a headliner type of mounting, so the only option available which seems to offer the camlock mount is the CIPA auto-dimming mirrors the link to which has been posted above.

But even with the CIPA mirrors you would have to be careful with choosing the correct mirror mounting base, as the ones I have seen on their website only have 1 or 2 mounting screws and not 3 like we have in the car, which means that you may need to drill new mounting holes in the roof to be able to mount the mirror OR try and take off the camlock base from the factory mirror and use it on the auto-dimming one.

There is more than enough space in the headlining area to run wires for the auto-dimming mirror, so that is not a concern at all.

I would be interested to see the way the T31 rear view mirror is mounted, so we can analyze it as well.

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror

I was looking at the CIPA window mount (wedge mounted) as an option. I talked to the CIPA rep and the camlock option does not have all the parts need to finish the job.

Gentex option US$179 wedge mounted
CIPA option US$114 wedge mounted

Don't know about the cost to Australia but maybe they have suppliers there

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror

I'm not sure about the wedge mount on the T30 exy as it can get quite messy with that glue on the windscreen and you would need to mount it at exactly the same height as the factory mirror which will be hard to measure.

I have sent photos of my camlock set-up to CIPA in the US, as we don't have any CIPA reps here in Australia. Maybe you can show the rep you talked to my photos for him to determine suitability because our camlock mount certainly looks like one of the ones they have displayed on their website.

camlock picture is on their website...

got to the auto-dim product page...

half way down the page is the following....

Available in Cam-lock mount for import vehicles - CLICK HERE for information on determining your mounting style.

I gotta take my mirror apart to see if it will work... the CIPA rep does not have the details... they just sell the stuff.

That's the same link I posted in my reply above. I wanna see the CIPA camlock mount not an example of various camlock mounts of other cars.

Your mirror mount will be exactly like mine.

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror

Nice find, but how much wider it is than the factory mirror, as it may impact on the operation of the sun-visors.

Oh, I got a reply from CIPA saying they don't offer any headliner mount dimming mirrors, all of their mirrors are stuck to the windscreen.

EDIT: Just went outside and measured the factory mirror, the auto dimming one measuring at 27.30cm wide will clear the visors just fine. I am tempted to order one for sure. emoticon

Re: Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror

The CIPA 36401 is the one I asked about and I sent CIPA the above photos of our X-Trail mirror. They said they don't have anything for roof mounted dimming mirrors and the same applies to Gentex. The only solution is to glue that new mount to the windscreen and it is a very complicated process that you simply will not be able to get wrong, the risk of cracking the windscreen if you make a mistake with that mount is far too great.

That eBay mirror can only fit on the windscreen.
