T30 trailer wiring problem

This is my first tech post for advice.

I have just bought a new box trailer. The problem I have is that when the trailer is connected the Xy's parking and dash lights come on when I press the brake pedal. The light switch is in the off position.

The trailers indicators, brake and park light work ok with the Xy's.

When the trailer is unplugged there is no problem.

I have checked the wiring on the trailer plug and all wires seem to be in the correct positions. There are no wires at pins 2 and 5. I believe these to be reverse and service brakes, so are not needed for the trailer.

The Xy has a 7 pin flat plug. Pins 2 and 5 are connected here. These two wires are red and black. I followed these wires back to the engine bay where I found that they had been cut and taped. The remainder ran through the firewall to a four pin plug which is not connected. The previous owner must have had electric brakes for a van. I disconnected the wires from pins 2 and 5. Lights still come on when brake pressed.

This may be a job for the auto electrician, but maybe someone has come across this problem before.

I did a forum search and no results.

Thanks,
Graham

Re: T30 trailer wiring problem

This is the best thread for this topic.

It sounds like you have an earth problem, re-locate the earth wire, I think its white, and and find a new location for it.
Either that or scrape under the current position, providing its eathed to the chassis or similar, and remove any paint as that can cause a bad earth.
If this doesn't work, then its best to see an auto electrician.

Re: T30 trailer wiring problem

The easiest way might be to rewire the trailer emoticon
This isnt as daunting as it sounds, as most (not all)box trailers run to a terminal strip under the tray.
If you use a test light in the Exy female outputplug, and with an assistant in the cab run through "what pin is what" (ie find the pin for taillights, brake lights, left and right indicator...make sure you have a good earth) you should be able to get that to correspond to the pins in the trailer,
You can then either split the male trailer connector and move pins, or go to the terminal strip under the trailer and move the input/ or output wires to correspond to your car loom.
Sounds like you are getting a back feed through the trailer. If the original XTrail wiring is fully functional (all lights required are present in the test of the female plug and function properly) then this should work.

If the Exy wiring is completely stuffed, it might need a rewire unfortunately.
If you get it rewired, get the old, incorrect loom removed at the same time.

Hope this helps emoticon

Thanks Tony and Dave for the quick responses. I will follow your advice through.

Just a question on Tony's suggestion. When you say to relocate the earth wire; are you referring to the trailer earth or the Xy's?

Thanks,
Graham

Re: T30 trailer wiring problem

Hi Graham,

As Dave said, it is a wiring problem with the trailer plug or maybe a trailer light fitting.

The reason your dash lights and the Xtrail parkers come on with the light switch off when you press the brake is that the parkers and dash lights are both connected together at the light switch so any feedback of 12V from wrong trailer wiring on the brake/parking lights will also send 12V to the dash lights.

Before you start pulling things apart, try the following simple tests and post the results...
- left indicator illuminates what on the trailer ?
- right indicator illuminates what on the trailer ?
- parking lights illuminate what on the trailer ?
Also try to see if the trailer and Xtrail lights illuminate brightly or dimly as this will help us to work out which wires might be crossed in the plug (sometimes crossing an earth wire in a fitting will feed 12V through a few fittings and back to the Xtrail wiring incorrectly).
It may be tricky to determine the difference between a dimly lit brake light and a parking light though.

Check the trailer first and then the Xy.
Do the test as Kev said in the latest reply, its definately an earth problem.
I think this is why the T31 trailer lights don't work until the key is on one click before starting, (all dash lights on)

Problem solved. Sloppy work by the trailer maker.

Spot on Kev.

I took the lenses off the trailer and checked connections. The left side park and brake light connectors were touching causing the feedback. Moved them apart, made sure all was tight and in place and presto all works fine.

Thanks all for you feedback and suggestions.

Re: T30 trailer wiring problem

Tha's pretty shocking considering it was a new trailer! I would be complaining to the store you bought it from or the manufacturer. Or when you said "new" did you mean new for you, but someone else had already owned it?

So much for their testing procedures before it leaves the factory!!!

Brand new Rich.

I'll be have a quiet word with the manufacturer next week, considering he thought it would be a problem with the Xy's wiring.

Another thing that I noticed when correcting the connectors was that you have to watch how you put in the park/stop globes. With the parker switch on, the right globe lit up the parker filament and the left globe lit up the stop filament. Turned the globe 180 degrees and the parker filament lit up. You learn something new everyday.
