T31 - Rear view camera - added to GPS/DVD/mp3/TV unit

HI
Hope this is in the right place.
I finally got around to fitting the rear view camera to my T31.

Quite a fiddly job but not techically difficult. The camera that came with the unit is about 45mm long and so will not flush mount to the external lower back door trim ...unless you buy a $5 lamp holder from a DIY chain like Bu**ings and adapt it such that the camera stands about20mm proud. Also spare bits of plastic needed to make the intenal washer.
Lots of trim removal required - in fact all of the internal back door trim. I am not a fan of this as I am convinced I am going to break bits. Checking the electronic manula helped as did buying a "trim removal" tool which helps pop out the fragile little clips.

Power in to the camera can be stolen form the luggage compartment power socket.

The video feed cable supplied with the camera was not long enough so i had to make my own.

I havent yet made use of the auto-on function when reverse gear is selected. I am still struggling to identify the gear box switch unit or the revers light wire that I can tap into near the stereo unit.

I have fitted a temporary switch in the dash as an interim measure - hence the pictures of camera IR light source only as well as with reversing lights on.

Also got the digital TV tuner working with the tiny "free" aerial included. Pretty cool but can't really see the long temr use of TV in a car.

Any thoughts on how to easily sort the switching wire would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any way you can use the reverse lights themselves to sitch the camera on .
This would be a lot easier than trying to run the wire all the way back to the gearbox which is where the reverse lights get their signal anyway.

I had a good look at the reverse lights themselves - quite easy to remove and to tap into the loom. The main problem is getting the wire through the bulkhead into the luggage space neatly. I would love to figure where the reverse light wiring runs from the gearbox back. I seem to have difficulty navigating the electronic manual even with the latest Adobe. The hyperlinks don't seem to work.

Rick,

There is a rubber grommet on the floor of the exy which is used to run the wires from the reverse light and also the towbar plug. You need to remove everything from the boot area to see it and you can use the same route to tap into the reverse light and run the wires into the cabin.

Thanks
When I had all the trim off the luggage compartment I saw that thee were two looms coming thorugh the floor towards the back on each side just behind the spare wheel.
I wasn't sure what they were. Would one be the trailer wiring loom?

Cheers

Rick

Re: T31 - Rear view camera - added to GPS/DVD/mp3/TV unit

I am in the process of fitting a wireless camera into my T31 and I need the reversing lights power at the head unit to make it switch over from radio or whatever to camera automatically when the car is in reverse.

Does anybody know if the reversing wire is in the harness connecting blocks in the passenger footwell this would save running a long wire to the rear.

Thanks in advance

Most of the wireless units only need the camera to be activated for the head unit to change over.....If you have purchased one from Super Cheap then unfortunately you will end up disappointed in the picture quality.
