Yes, good point. Afterall mud is water+dirt.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner

Had the vehicle inspected by another independant mechanic today, he has clarified that the drive belt tensioner is what is causing the rattling noise. This will be done next week when he has the part.

So far two independant mechanics have diagnosed this fault which looks as if it's the problem, with no charge so far. When Nissan looked at the car they denied this was at fault, they claim the noise couldn't be found hoping i would be sucked into throwing more money at them if it was booked in with them on another day.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner

I'm glad to report that the drive belt tensioner assembly has been replaced. As usual with these type of parts it was the bearing which had failed. With the part costing $173 and a little over half an hour the job was done for $220 including GST.

I'm sure glad this reliable mechanic looked after me, rather than being shuffled around like kids in a school yard with the dealer. emoticon

And the verdict ? Its all working sweet as just like a bought one ? Or ...
Also did the mechanics offer any sort of suggestion as to what may have caused it to fail ?

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner

Had a short drive of the exy just to fill her up (wife usually drives it during the week) and found the engine running smoothly with no abnormal noises. The mechanic was a little surprised it had failed after 65k as it is driven conservatively with no towing of heavy loads or lead foot driving. Now and again items such as this can fail due to many factors, eg excessive heat, dirt, poorly lubricated or irregular loading of bearings.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner

I just read these posts the other day searching for some info because my 2004 Ti petrol with 135000ks on it was making a rattling / chattering sound on idle. Early investigations showed that it also coincided with the idler pulley and the drive belt tensioner jumping back and forth but only when the ac was engaged. I started out by replacing a very well used drive belt. The local Nissan dealer didn't have one in stock so i sourced one from the local Bursons store (Dayco 6PK2250 at $75 no cheaper but at least available). Very easy to change from under the vehicle as per instructions given in other posts. This didn't remove the noise so i then replaced the idler puller once again purchased from Bursons for $29 and in stock. It so happens that it is the same as used on VN to VR Commodores (Nuline EP001 ). It is also simple to replace using a 14mm socket or ring spanner but place your finger behind the bolt to stop the captive nut from falling out. Undo and tension with the 6mm rod / bolt etc in the locking hole so you aren't stressing the tensioner / drive belt. The old pulley and bearing seemed fine to me.
The noise and chattering disappeared for a day or two but then returned. I had sprayed some WD40 on the tensioner pulley bearing so decided to investigate the tensioner itself as it didn't rotate smoothly when i turned it on the engine.
This takes a little patience and the correct tools. There are 2 x 12mm bolts holding the tensioner on to the crankcase. Remove the tensioner pulley for ease of access and release the 6mm tensioner locking pin. The bottom bolt is fairly easy to remove. The top bolt is a pain. You will need a deep 3/8" x 12mm drive socket or a deep 12mm ring spanner to access it. Small hands also help. Beware you do not damage the water pump pulley next to it. I cleaned the tensioner housing assembly with turps as it is open to road grime etc. but you cannot open it to get inside. I then dried it and oiled it allowing oil to penetrate inside the housing fro an hour or so. During this time i gripped the base housing carefully in a vice with soft jaws and rotated it back and forth until it moved freely on the spring. (Replace the 14mm pulley bolt so you can get a spanner / socket on it). Make sure you remove any excess oil before installing as any oil on the drive belt can reduce its life / effectiveness. This made a big difference and the chattering has long gone.
I cannot see the point in spending $180 for a new tensioner assembly, or worse, pay a mechanic to go looking further afield when it is not required. Cheers - Davo

Re:

Good to hear Davo,
I wouldn't be too complacent about the tensioner pulley as just by oiling it up doesn't mean its all good.
Keep an eye on it and listen out for it as it will probably start making noises very soon.
Hopefully it will last you.
You can save a lot of money by doing it yourself, all it takes is to do the job once and confidence levels go through the roof. The hardest part is having the guts to give it a go.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner

Can the pulley on the tensioner be replaced rather than just reoiling it?

On the Commodore it was easy once you realised it was attached with a LEFT Hand thread.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner

I think I may be the first Diesel with this issue. After several runs involving mud it seems the drive belt bearing is shot and causing a rattling sound with a very feint whir. Had the diagnosis confirmed by my mechanic and a quote of $130 for the part plus labour so something between $200-300. Considering a few months ago the belts were underwater for a couple of hours while I dug the car out not too bad I guess.
