Drive belt pulley tensioner
Have recently discovered a rattle in the engine bay only when engine is idling. Took the car for an inspection at my local mechanic and discovered the drive belt pulley tensioner had rapid jiggling type movement, which co-insided with the rattle. Most likely diagnosis is the bearing in the pulley tensioner needs replacing. We agreed to change the drive belts to new ones while the assembly is apart.
With 65k on the clock this would seem to be a wise move, as i think they would be normally done at around 80k ? Not sure if others have had a similar problem occur at this sort of mileage. Would these parts have to be sourced from Nissan? where out of warranty by a year so that doesn't come into consideration.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner
Most pulleys are not servicable which means that you can't just change the bearing itself.
The whole lot has to be bought.
Get ready though, my Patrol one cost me $180.00 2 years ago.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner
I'm glad for the warning, the tensioner and drive belt come in at just under $250 combined. Hopefully my trusty mechanic can do the job for around $350 including labour, depends how easy it is to access.

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner
Thanks Kev for those notes from the manual, i'm sure they will assist my mechanic. Have many other cases been reported in the past and if so what sort of milage had they done when the tensioner bearing failed?

Re: Drive belt pulley tensioner
Update on tensioner. Took to my mechanic, had not ordered parts due to phone line down over past couple of days.
Went to Nissan to order parts, said they would have them in by lunch time so got them to do the job in the arvo. They phoned back saying belt was worn but tensioner was not at fault.
With the drive belt changed and tensioner working properly the rattle is still present at idle. I asked them again to check for the noise, they could not find anything unless further investigation was required. Their next step would be to remove timing chain cover. I mentioned that it might be symptoms of the loose butterfly screws in the engine or broken ceramic bits from the cat converter. Their reply was further investigation would be needed.
At this stage i will take the car to another mechanic when i can spare another day off from work.
Rattle seems only to be present during idle, can't here it under normal driving, performance seems normal. May check dip stick to see if any metal fragments are present. May get next mechanic to change oil to see if anything is abnormal. 8(

MMM - mud means money.
Spent plenty of money in the past keeping my GU Patrol (and earlier 4wd's) after weekends out playing hard.
Hmm - I've done wheel bearings, front main seals, diff oil, gearbox and transfer oils, alternators..... And the mud, especially, in the pig pen, at Cruiser has a close resemblance to grinding pastes......
(I may be in Tassie now, but born and bred Brissy boy, who has spent many weekends camping and playing in all the good 4wd spots & parks in Qld).......
