Re: Rear Towbar step
No worries Simon, reverse lights will be cool.
If you need any measurements, give me a yell.
Just make sure the edges of the step are rounded (to avoid hurting your leg when bumping into it) and the top surface must be non-slip.

Re: Rear Towbar step
FYI i found one in a local barn type auto shop. It wasnt cheap but about the same price as ebay +postage and it was there ... sooo
And, even after adjusting it so it was a bit higher on the wheel, it still fits perfectly in the endless hole that is the left hand draw space
Kids reakon its 2 thumbs up

Re: Rear Towbar step
Thought i would add my recent addition in this thread.
It's sort of a rear nudge bar. Useful as a rear step and better access to the roof.
I mainly put this on as i do a fair amount of camping and driving through trails etc.
This comes in handy with reversing parking in spots in the bush as all the small trees/shrubery will be pushed away by the bar instead of scratching the plastic bumpers. And it adds a bit of chrome look to the car.
I was unsure of the quality as there was minimal information and only one picture of the bar (not fitted). I took that chance as this is something which i wanted and have not seen something like this for an X-Trail before. I did need to make up a bracket for the left hand side as the one supplied did not fit. I think i read somewhere that the rear towbar/hook is different for overseas models and i think this was imported from overseas. I may make up some new brackets later as the towhook is partially blocked by the bracket to hold the nudge bar on.
For those who use the X-Trail for offroading like me there is minimal loss on the rear departure angle. The actual bar sits just above the bumper and it is only the two brackets which sit a little lower.
Before and after fitted

Re: Rear Towbar step
Looks good Mat, I have only seen this type of rear bar on vans etc.
I don't think you had to worry too much about departure angle as the 44 gallon muffler will stop that.
The finger prints on that muffler makes it look like you have a couple of holes in it.

Re:
Hi Allan,
So is the purpose of your towbar attachment is protection of the rear bumper? Does it cover your reverse lights when in use?
The stainless steel towbar step which used to be available in the Online Shop is no longer in stock but you can find it on eBay for around $130.00 (including freight), so just type "hitch step" as the search word on eBay and you'll see it there.

Re: Tow bar step
Bit of a story here.
In my Corolla and had to come to a quick stop, the car behind me must have stopped about 1 mm from the rear of my car. As I could only see about half of his bonnet.
So, to protect my rear on the Exy at least a bit, I made the bar up, I reckon I am going to add a plate to stand on too, whether I make it removable or not will depend what I come up with. Now I'm thinking an Aluminium stand on plate that doubles as two seater collapsible removable plate in one. I reckon a collapsible plastic table and "Picnic" time is here.
The bar does not cover the reverse lights as it's 2" square tube, but the Hitch Step is 3" tube, so probably would cover a bit of the reverse lights.
Checked out Ebay for the "Hitch Step" and found one for $130:00 plus delivery, probably about $30:00 NSW to Adelaide, which is pretty good as it looks great.
Couple of pics for "cooch t31"
I like the visibility of the reflective tape - I think it kind of says - Back Off. Great in daylight too.
