Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

The rattle stopped all on it's own.

But then the transmission completely failed at 48,000 kms.

The local Nissan dealer service department have just told me that Nissan have confirmed a completely new transmission is needed. They're going to get back to me with how long it will take. My X-Trail has been off the road since last Thursday evening.

WOW!!

The number of failed CVT transmissions is certainly getting alarming! I wonder what the problem is to have them fail so early?

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

Whilst very helpful and prompt, the service department were rather coy when I asked what had happened.

I'll post the final report when I get it. Although I suspect it will be recorded as "internal fault" as had happened to others.

I am hoping that even if we never find out, there are groups of technicians at Nissan fixing the problem. That way, the replacement unit won't have the problems of the the original.

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

With 2007 T31 models nearing end of factory warranty soon, one has to ask Nissan what would happen if the CVT fails outside of the warranty period seeing it's an obvious manufacturing defect that is causing it. I'd hate to imagine the costs associated with CVT replacement if it does happen out of warranty.

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

Just did a google search and found there have been plenty of Mini's with CVT's failing anywhere from 25,000miles to 43,000miles in the UK.

It seems that the CVT needs very clean oil with frequent changes and if it misses an oil change then the life degrades very quickly.

Based on the operating principle of the CVT, with the metal chain running across tapered metal cone pulleys, I would expect there to much more wear than in a conventional automatic transmission (or am I getting this wrong somehow).

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

the problem has nothing to do with the way the cars r being driven , ( off road or not ) ,
the probem is a factory based one and has been traced back to production of the units ,( poor quality metal used on some of the internal bearings ) this is where the noise is coming from !!!!!
the gold coast dealer has now replaced over 20 tranmissions with some having more than one fitted and one with under 5000 km on the clock ,
all replacment units have now been modified on the production line and so far so good with the ones that have been fitted ,
just a side note !!!!!! it seams that of late nissan have replaced several tranmissions on the older model murano too..........

That is very good news, thanks. I was wondering if I was in for 10,000-50,000 kms transmission replacements for the life of the X-Trail.

My wife Compass has the CVT and I have not heard any issues with it. Or is the Jeep CVT technology different?

The local Nissan service department have just called. The new transmission will arrive at the beginning of next week. It will take a few days to install. That's going to be the best part of 2 weeks off the road emoticon

When I asked Nissan Customer Service (the 1800... number) about a replacement vehicle, they said that the service department have to submit a car hire application form if the vehicle is going to be off the road more than a week. The service department are going to get back to me!

It seems to me that Nissan should be bending over backwards to keep their customers happy, considering how often this is being reported emoticon

It should be standard practice to give out a loan car when an extended repair period is involved and this initiative should be coming directly from the dealer without having you to chase it up with Nissan head office. The loan car should have been give to you on the same day Nissan Australia determined that a new transmission will be needed.
