Re:

OMG!!! From reading through the posts it looks like I have a long road to travel.
Had the engine light come on and loss of power.
Took 2008 T31 Xtrail into Nissan and diagnosed P0746 error code that was further diagnosed as internal faulty pressure control solinoid that can only be fixed by replacing CVT assembly.
Quoted $10, 000 part, oil and labour to replace or can source 2nd hand one for approx $2, 500 for the part.

Will take advice from this wonderful forum and post the outcome.

Forgot to mention this is only after 105,000km.
From owning 2 other vehicles (mazda and ford) that did 200, 000km plus each without too many problems I definitely did not expect this major problem.

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

Hey all, thought I would chime in as this is the closest thread I could find on the forums to what I'm after.

I have a 2011 stl.... Mentioned problems with the CVT when taking off etc etc at the 70k service (last one while still under warranty) about a year ago and it came back all good, apparently 'drove like normal'. Since then had other companies service it for the rest of them with a couple of oil changes myself. It's out of warranty now and I just dropped it in to nissan for the 100k service and mentioned the CVT problems again.

Phone rings ..... and the oil is all burnt or something and they say it's buggered and requires replacement...... At a cost of 7k!!!!!!!!!

'Good will' claim going in but he didn't seem very confident. Anyone had luck with the 'out of warranty' replacements? Or the whole 'good will' application?

Cheers

Kurt

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

Hi folks,

I've been reading this forum with interest as I'm looking to get a 'new' car, and the one I've seen around that makes my heart go pitter-patter is the X-trail. I've admired them on the road, drooled over them in carparks, and accosted owners to ask them if they're happy with them (mixed response). I've sat in the drivers seat of a 2008 petrol CVT auto, been shown the back cargo area... but haven't driven one.

I've also been doing a bit of research on the X-trail and its competitors.

The reason I don't already own one is the CVT. The horror stories. The battles with dealers. The repair bills. The noise.

Reading this thread was depressing stuff... until it seemed all was well in the T31 series 3 onwards, late 2010 on. My hopes lifted.

But, the previous comment by Kpow on here is about a 2011 model with CVT problems. There seem to be reports on all sides of other Nissan cars with CVT problems. Is the 'improved' CVT really improved significantly? Isn't it still a Jatco unit? Is it still noisy, is it still tricky to drive? Is it going to need replacing?

Is there any real evidence that the late 2010 onwards CVT is OK? Technical info on how it differs from the earlier ones? Or are we relying on the lack of high numbers of reports of problems?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Put it this way, since 2010 when Jatco addressed the CVT problem, the comment above and one other CVT failure case is all that I personally have come across on this forum to date.

If you read the previous pages, it explains the problem experienced by Jatco when they designed the CVT transmission and they indeed fixed that across the entire CVT transmission range, not only for the X-Trail but all other CVT driven cars most of which use Jatco.

Hi Kurt,

More details required please as it's very un-usual for a post 2010 CVT model to develop the same fault as the older models some of which had the faulty CVT transmission.

How many kms the car has travelled?
What is the service history?
What's the dealer's definition of "buggered" what exactly has failed in the transmission?
What error codes (if any) were present?

Re:

Hey sorry for the lack of detail I was more just after any others that had dealt with the 'good will' part of nissan.

Perfect service history up to 80k with nissan, problem identified at 70k. After then I had a friend mechanic complete a couple then the 100k was with nissan. Now the car is at 110k.

All they said was the oil was burnt and there is an internal fault with the gearbox, no other Information at all. Car still drives but gearbox can be a bit funky sometimes dropping a gear when taking off, high revs sometimes.

Thanks sorry I cant offer any more info

Re:

Hi Kurt,

The "Good Will" part of Nissan is good if you show persistence and if your dealer puts forward a convincing case. The dealer has to make references to your complaint about the CVT issue at the 70K service. This is a crucial point.

Re:

Ok cool that sounds promising. I sent them copies of the service report and so on so can only hope! 7k is a lot of money to fork out. Heard that worst case is they might come back with replacement for me but Id have to pay instalations costs of about 800. Fine be me id that's the case.

Thanks for I put all 👍
