I had looked at the magnetic signs in the past for a previous vehicle, but I feel that with the exy, that the plastic and aluminium sections may not be very handy when it comes to attaching magnets. As for the mud on the chrome, that is one technique I am already quite familiar with, and something I already do. The spray on stuff sounds like a cool option, but probably a bit more effort than I want to go to each and every time I take a trip out bush, it's a fairly frequent event. I have come across the idea of stitching in some camo pvc sheet onto the back of a roll of cam net, to stop the shiny bits showing through. I did have some ideas for some custom vynil a while ago, and I suppose if I kept it white, I could get away with that and still do the cam net idea. My current dilemma is that the vehicle came with quite a few stone chips, and I feel that it needs a paint job to help keep the bodywork intact over the long term. that and a couple of scratches I added myself. A thought that has just come to mind, is modifying a roof pod with a few hinges, so that I can pull a tab and have cam net roll down over the vehicle. I have considered the opinions above, and at present, my feelings are as follows: Cam paint job: done well, would be useful, but perhaps overkill for the purpose. Khaki Green: Could be done well, but eliminates my car as a resale option. Cam net: looking like a safer optionnondisclosed_email@example.com (Dranoweb)Sun, 22 Mar 2009 09:43:32 +0000 Re: Resale value after custom paint job.https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025619,from=rss#post2025619https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025619,from=rss#post2025619Just to expand on Kev's suggestion (or possibly a solution to the plastic front guards) - I have seen advertised over the years (either in 4WD magazines or on the net) a product which is a spray-on paint protection targetted towards 4WD-owners that dries like a soft plastic - to remove it you simply peel it off. It's intended to stop scratches in paintwork from branches etc when 4WD'ing, or even to save washing the car after some serious mud-puddle bashing or sand/salt from getting to the paintwork. You may be able to use that product on the guards and then once it's set, you would then apply your camo paint. When you want to remove it, simply peel it off. Certainly more time-consuming than the magnetic option, but it's probably the only solution for the plastic panels. You could even use the same technique for all the other panels if you wanted to. Apart from the ongoing costs of having to re-apply each time, the only other catch I can think of is whether the plastic film will allow the paint to adhere to it... nondisclosed_email@example.com (basshead)Sat, 21 Mar 2009 21:59:43 +0000 Re: Resale value after custom paint job.https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025610,from=rss#post2025610https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025610,from=rss#post2025610Here is an option out of left-field for you Drano... You know those magnetic business signs you can get ? How about getting some of them done up in the camoflage pattern you want ? Then you can stick them on when going bush and take them off when you get back. This would let you get custom cut panels to fit the doors and allow you to open them. The only problem area is the front guards which are plastic, but you might be able to fix some metal strip inside the guards to give enough "holding power".nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Sat, 21 Mar 2009 21:08:10 +0000 Re: Resale value after custom paint job.https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025587,from=rss#post2025587https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025587,from=rss#post2025587quote:Dranoweb wrote: or a huge roll of cam net with a windscreen hole cut out. However, chrome and white paint shows through pretty well. The cam net would certainly be a more practical option and a cheaper one at the same time without having to drive around camm'ed all the time on the streets. The easiest option to further disguise the car under the cam net is to muddy it, so any chrome and white bits won't stand out as much. It's not like you will be living in the bush and wild-life 24x7, so a permanent paint job is not justified for such a purpose. However, if getting attention on the streets is what you are after, it'll certainly do it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Sat, 21 Mar 2009 09:56:24 +0000 Re: Resale value after custom paint job.https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025586,from=rss#post2025586https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025586,from=rss#post2025586quote:jalalski wrote: For some reason "murdering a car" theme pops-up in my mind every-time I read this topic LOL I am ex-army myself, so that last thing I wanna do is drive an army look-alike car for the rest of my life. hahahahahaha Well, Basically it's either a nice clean looking paint job, or a huge roll of cam net with a windscreen hole cut out. However, chrome and white paint shows through pretty well. One particular application I had in mind is when one is out bush, and parked half way up a hill with a nice view of the surrounding area, a white car is visible for miles as it stick out like the dogs proverbials. A vehicle that is green, if even a bit out of tone with the surrounds, is much more easily overlooked. I have many good camping spots, and find that all too often I am spotted and my sites are take over, or destroyed by weekenders who have no clue or don't care enough to bother. In addition, with the nice quiet engine of the exy, it's already pretty easy to sneak up on wildlife, but again, I'm spotted pretty easily. At any rate, the reason I posted this question was to get a feel about how the paint job may be perceived by the general public, and the feedback so far has all been worth considering.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Dranoweb)Sat, 21 Mar 2009 09:46:49 +0000 Re: Resale value after custom paint job.https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025585,from=rss#post2025585https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2025585,from=rss#post2025585quote:almic wrote: Drano, Sorry but coming from a Defence background, why on earth would you want to paint your Exy in camo, olive green (especially drab) or battle grey (I know not mentioned grey, just thought get in first) Sorry to me not a good look and Yuk. I have good reason for the paint job, and practicality is the main factor in this concept. Truth of the matter though is that disruptive patters work quite well, and would serve my intended purposes just as well. However, the opinion of those who do not know me seems to be much the same as yours. Given this however, I probably have to consider that the local police (several of which are also part of the Reserves, may also think the same, and pay me a little more attention than I need.
