The modern LED is a 5W unit and the process of converting electricity to light generates heat (not as much as a wire filament). If you don't get rid of the heat the semiconductor junction that generates the light draws more power gets hotter draws more power etc etc (thermal runaway is the technical term) then end result is the smoke starts to leak out and the device stops working [the theory is that all electronic components are filled with smoke - when the smoke leaks out they stop working - I'm yet to disprove it] The same theory seems to apply to petrol engines as most stop working soon after the smoke starts to leak out.

Not a problem with those, they use low power LEDs so there is not the need for large heatsinks
