Re: LED headlights?

The modern LED is a 5W unit and the process of converting electricity to light generates heat (not as much as a wire filament). If you don't get rid of the heat the semiconductor junction that generates the light draws more power gets hotter draws more power etc etc (thermal runaway is the technical term) then end result is the smoke starts to leak out and the device stops working [the theory is that all electronic components are filled with smoke - when the smoke leaks out they stop working - I'm yet to disprove it] The same theory seems to apply to petrol engines as most stop working soon after the smoke starts to leak out.

Re: LED headlights?

10 years ago, LED's were generally only putting out say 1/4W or less, and the heat just wasn't an issue. Now they're packing 5W in a much smaller casing (surface-mount) and need to get rid of the heat.

Alan, would an 8X LED head-lamp circuitry fry by letting it run continuously, allowing the batteries to completely drain? I have one which doesn't work anymore even after changing the batteries. I suspect the circuitry didn't like the too-low voltage as the batteries drained completely flat...

Re: LED headlights?

I am getting concerned about the level of heat being discussed. Moving a little to the left and right, ie the parking lights, I have been giving thought to the LED conversion as discussed in other threads.

Should I be concerned about the heat buildup with these?

They are "25 SMD LED 168/194/W5W Wedge bulb (Xenon White)"

Re: LED headlights?

Not a problem with those, they use low power LEDs so there is not the need for large heatsinks
